The pto shaft that is on my bush hog as lost the little pin piece that you push in to attach it to the pto splines on the tractor. What is a way to fix this without having to get a new pto shaft or spline end of the pto shaft?? Will some kind of hitch pin work??

I had a problem with the push button release on
the drive shaft for my finish mower.
The button was stuck and didn't do anything.
I took it out altogether.
I took the driveshaft yoke and mounted it on a drill press
and drilled out the hole where the push button was.
Put a bolt thru it and double nutted it.
It has worked like that all summer.
Hope to get it a new yoke for it before next year.

Mine was 1/2 I think. I can go measure it after while.
When you pull the button out it will have a big
diameter and a little diameter.
Just drill it out to match the big diameter.
Then get a bolt that size and 2 nuts and 2 flat washers.
I'll go check it out here shortly.

Your liberties with nomenclature has Dell confused.

Note that the "PTO shaft" is the splined stub out the back of your tractor. The shaft that connects there and runs to the mower to attach to the "gear box input shaft" or "pinion shaft" is a "drive shaft" or "drive line" but not a "PTO shaft."

Like Bob said, that push pin is widely available where mowers, other 3pt equipment, and drive shafts are sold but there are at least three types. Seeing as you are messing with the drive shaft anyway you might want to inspect it and R&R as needed. Check the shield bearings. The shield should spin free of the drive shaft but the plastic bearings just behind the knuckles at each end wear and the shield does not spin so it is no protection at all. If you do not maintain the bearings the shield will end up worn and you will have to replace shield. Those bearings will be available where you go to get the push pin. They are held in by a big, sloppy snap ring. Pull the drive shaft apart and maybe clean it up and grease it. You may discover a grease zerk, or three, you did not know about.

Ryan..... ....common hardware store part called a spring roll-pin. 5/16x2". Installed thru yer ORC greese fittings called zerks. Make certain you center it in the inner section of the ORC. Test by hand spinning the ORC with engine off and ingear. Iff'n you can't handspin-itt, try the other direction, Iff'n you still can't handspin-itt, you ain't gotter centered..... ...Dell

This is a COMMON replacement item.

A farm supply, TSC store, tractor dealer, or one of the "on-line" farm parts suppliers should be able to help you out.

Be sure to get the correct pin, this is a safety item. Things can get kinda ugly when the spinning PTO shaft flies off!
