My side mount 8n has stopped running, it has run like a champ since i bought it a year ago. While i was mowing it acted like it was running out of gas (I have a half tank of gas in it), and stalled, now it wont turn over. I have checked the fuel line, gas is flowing where do i look now. Thanks for the help, this forum has been great for a city boy that loves playing rancher.

You have to narrow it down a little to get good advice here. Check for spark at the plugs by removing one and grounding it on some (non-painted) part of the engine. If spark is good, and fuel is flowing, it is probably a carb issue. If spark is no good, then its electrical and the good people here can run you through how to check the individual components (or you can read the archives).

You need to check that screen filter behind the fuel line brass elbow in the carb. And the spark.
Assuming the starter cranks the engine:

Here"s the book on troubleshooting that ignition.
No spark at any plug wire. Take primary wire off the coil, turn on the ignition and watch for a spark when primary wire is brushed against a ground. Strong spark (1/4"+ diameter spark) here says there is a problem in the coil/distributor.
No spark says problem is between the battery terminal on the starter relay and primary wire on the coil. If you get no spark when you ground the terminal block upper terminal then the problem is the connection between the terminal and the starter motor relay. Turn on the ignition switch and ground the lower terminal on the terminal block. If no spark then the ignition switch or switch wires are bad. If it does spark then the problem is the connection between that terminal and the primary connection on the coil.
Intermittent spark at all plug wires. You have to key-on crank or run the engine and watch to see if you get 8 or 10 regular, consistent, hot-blue sparks in a row. If you have a problem with each plug, that’s probably the primary circuit. Check, clean and tighten these terminals: battery, starter relay, all terminals on the terminal block, and the primary lead on the coil. Check spark out of the coil lead, bend and replace it lead shows surface cracks or any damage. Replace or gap the points as needed. Thoroughly clean the distributor, rotor and cap. Inspect the rotor and cap and replace if damaged, cracked or tracked. Make sure the points breaker arm is not binding. Make sure the points mounting screws are tight and the threads are not worn. Replace the condenser and check again. If the trouble has not been corrected then replace the coil and check again.
Good spark at some plug wires, but not all. Hold the bad wire 3/16” off a ground while you run the engine at around 500rpm. It’s weak if it doesn’t regularly jump the gap 8 or 10 times in a row. If it’s weak then bend the plug wire and if it shows surface cracks then replace with copper plug wire. Replace a wire that has any damaged insulation. Solder the plug wire connections is best practice. Make sure the plug wire connections are clean and firmly seated in the socket. Still have a problem then remove the distributor cap and wash it in warm, soapy water and then inspect it for cracks or carbon tracks. Replace a cracked or tracked cap. You might have to check the points gap at each lobe of the distributor cam. If each one is not in spec then you have wear on the lobe, bushing or shaft. There should be no side-to-side slop in the shaft in any direction.

Sounds like your rubbing block on the points has finally worn down enough to not allow points to open fully. Check points gap, may have to file points to remove some pits. Better yet change the points. Mine did the same thing just this week. Also thought it was gas. It showed spark at points. Just wasn't hardly any gap. Reset points and fired right up. I did have to jump it cause I ran the battery down to low trying to get it to start when I thought it had run out of gas.

When you tested the fuel line did you remove the fuel line or the nut under the carburetor? I believe the nut is the check. Somebody besides meis going to remind you to check the ignition switch also by jumping across the contacts. It's sometimes called a "weaksister" with my apologies to Jim.

Clear up a few issues.

It was running.. then stalled. Now it won't start up? or it won't even crank over?

If it won't crank over.. sounds like your battery died.. shorted internally.. that killed the ignition and stalled the engine.. now the dead battery won't turn the starter over.

Other possibility is charging system was bad and you simply ran the battery dead due to no charge.. in that case.. charge the battery and re-check.

I'd check with a known good battery.. also.. fuel to the carb is good.. fuel thru the carb drain is a better test of fuel flow.

post back with what you find... if the new battery turns it over but it won't start.. try a whiff of starting fluid.. see if it will start or run on the fluid.. if so.. fuel or weak spark issue..

Again.. please be very specific.

Tries to crank over? Does that mean the starter barely turns over.. or that the starter spins over fine and the tractor simply does not start.... 2 different situations, and different ways to procede from each situation.

Ok.. lets check your spark first.. pull a plug wire and use an old plug with a wide 3/16" gap.. see if you have nice blue spark when the starter turns over..
