Today I was doing a little box scraping. When I tried to change gears all of a sudden the shift (gear changing) lever was in my hand and not in the tractor! I have a an early front mount distributor 8N with standard 4 speed transmission. I took the cover plate off. The piece of the gear lever that remains with the cover is inside a spring and a sliding slotted mechanism that is riveted to the plate. How can I get this fixed? How do I get the rest of the gear lever out? Can I buy replacement parts? Any tricks I need to know to get it all back together (including when I have to put it all back into the tractor)? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

Compress the spring and remove the retaining clip from the shifter. You can get it welded and grind it back down to the original configuration or replace it with a boneyard shifter.

There is also a pin that goes thru the bottom of the shifer stick that fits a slot in the cover. As long as you have the cover off, check for wear on the pin as well as a gouged out slot in the cover, which can be welded and filed out smooth again. The shifter pin can be pressed out and a new one installed.

I believe parts are available thru New Holland at a reasonable price. Bring the cover with you the dealer probalble can fix it in 15 minutes or so
