Sorry, I know this is off the tractor subject but, if anyone would know old motors it's this board. My father in law has found an old motor that is in decent looking shape, it is a four cylinder with a top mount distributor. The only ID we can find is it has STAR imprinted on the side of it. We don't know if it is from an old car or piece of equipment or what. Has anyone heard of this? Or do you have any suggestions of where else I could look for info? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. SF.

If we're talkin "ancient".there was a Star Auto Co back in the 1900-1930s? Their engine would most likely have been a flathead 4 w/magneto ignition/Unknown what else was marked named Star, but as I like a challege, and am laid up for a few days I'll do some pokin around and post back here if I find anything definite for ya.

The time frame in these responses sounds right. My father in law thouhgt they were from the 20's or 30's. When I said it was a top mount distibutor I guess I meant magnetto. You can just see where it mounts, and the plugs are so close there are just srips of metal that point in that direction instead of plug wires. Thanks and keep me posted. VA.

Hi SF, "Star" was one of the models of car made by Marmon. Unfortunately I don't know enough about Marmon to tell you whether that's where your engine came from. God luck...Al English

The Star car was made by William Durant, after he was fired by GM in 1920. The Star was produced from 1922-1928. The 1922 35HP four cylinder touring model sold for $345.
