I have a 53 NAA and am having a problem with the throttle staying put. I can put it up to full throttle but it doesnt stay. Anyone have any advice on how to go about fixing this.

Thanks.

I had this on my 54 NAA (first NAA I have had) and here is how I finally fixed it. There is a round friction disk that sits on top of your bell housing that the throttle linkage hooks to. Make sure that is not loose first. If it is, remove the cotter pin and turn the top nut down a turn or two until that "spider" looking washer presses down on the round washer looking part (it is called a bell crank) good - not too tight, but snug. Test your throttle to make sure it is not too tight before you replace that cotter pin because it is hard to get to and you don't want to do it twice. Next - do you have the spring that hooks into this round friction disk washer (bell crank) and the underside of the battery box? This spring helps keep the throttle from hunting back to idle when the governor pulls against it. I could not find this spring at ANY parts supplier, so I had to make a few trips to the hardware store until I found a spring that was not too tight, too loose, too short, or too long (yes, I have quite a collection of springs now...) before I found on that was "just right". Now my throttle stays put at 1800 rpms or so, but I still have to hold it when I get up around 2000+ rpms - but I don't use that range much anyway.

Good luck,
Dan

That throttle return spring is still available at CNH, if we're talking about the spring that connects to the bottom of the battery box.

Don't know - it was trial and error... From the sounds of it though, it can still be had at a CNH dealer - I must have just had a incompetent parts guy at my CNH store when I checked...

This is going to be a silly question, but does anyone have a picture of this assembly under the battery tray showing the springs location. Mine doesn't have one and i need to see how to hook it up.

I don't have a pic, but I can tell you exactly where it hooks up to if you have an original battery box. Under the battery box in the center is a round stud sticking down with a ridge close to the tip. One side of the spring (the side with the round end) goes around this stud and settles into that ridge. The other end of the spring (the end with the hook) goes on the bellcrank - that is the round section under the nut that the throttle linkage hooks to. One side of the bellcrank has a ball for the throttle linkage, and around the edge from that is a tab sticking out with a small hole in it. The hook on the spring goes through this hole.

HTH,
Dan

Follow the throttle linkage down till it makes the union at a friction disc... check for loose/play there.

The p/n you need is naa9827B. I just replaced mine this spring and got it from the local CNH dealer. Good luck!

That p/n was for the spring. The p/n for the friction washer is 99778. Both are available from your CNH dealer. Good luck!
