1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laraedo , straight six, 4.0 engine.

I'm out under the Jeep and have two puzzeling questions for you auto gurus. Yesterday noticed small leak on garage floor of about CD disc diameter. Liqiud is oil. slightly grey to black with very sweet taste. It trickels from under radiator passenger side. I believe it is comning from front side of radiator. Cannot find source. Checked transmission lines, no evident leaks and wrong side of radiator, also wrong color and taste for trans fluid. Does not taste like regular oil either. Breakfast of fluids today. Liquid is not anti freeze. It is surely a very sweet oil. No decrease in oil, anti freeze or trans fluids. Been having trouble with my AC as it drains into the rear passenger floor. Could this be AC oil? Since apparently AC drain is clogged could pressure build up be causing AC oil leak? Anybody know where the drain hose is located for AC and how to unclog?

Valhallareject was right! in reply to ratface, 09-01-2005 08:21:16
Valhallareject had it right. This is one day later. turned out my leak got worse today at bottom right of radiator. Must have washed all the old grime off because today it was clearly ant-freeze, no oil mixed in. spent 11 hours replacing radiator. Bottom right 2 inches all rotted out. They sure pack things in tight nowadays. Radiators used to be so easy.

Hers a post I found on yer AC problem

I have seen this myself before! I have one in here today as
a matter of fact!!! I found the problem is the drain tube
is plugged even though you say it is clear. I know this
isn't the right fix persay but I pulled the carpet up on
the pass. side and drilled a small hole in the drain tube
housing big enough to put a blow gun into and put shop air
to it! It was like somebody opened a fauset! Then I put a
small plug in the hole I created to seal it! This is alot
faster than taking the box out and seems to have acomplised
what the complaint was all about! I hope this helps.

Most of the ac drain leeks I see are from the coils in the dash/passanger side, .. drain usually near firewall.

I've never tasted compressor oil.. or peg oil.. so can't help you there.

What's the oil smell like?.. gas/burn?

No smell at all. scooped some up on my finger and shoved in my big ratface nose. nothing like oiling up the nose early in the day. no smell of additives or burning. maybe a hint of clean watery smell.

Process of elimination might help...its not engine oil.....not transmission fluid.....not brake fluid.....not antifreeze (although antifreeze could account for the sweet taste)....not battery acid (I hope....but should be rather "salty" nonetheless)....not power steering fluid....not differential grease (unless its really talented differential grease)....windshield washer fluid perhaps????.....compressor oil????....color sounds right.....but sweet????....I haven't a clue. Other possibilities..... a trapped pool of "nasty" water created by a/c condensation.....a live-in sqirrel's build in plumbing.....do you remember what all you did Saturday night right after you said, "oh, pi_s on it!"? Another approach may be to fix whatever is wrong with the a/c and see if the problem is mitigated. Personally.....I bet its a combination of things....like slight antifreeze leak combined with oil leak and road grime.....but hey..... I'm just guessing!!

no, on saturday night I was p**sing on the drivers side. Car was on an incline to the passenger side though. That fluid is supposed to be salty though, thats one I haven't tasted. ain't no squirrels under there. I found the TSB Hobo mentioned. Will try that. Pull the carpet back, drill hole, insert coat hanger. I need to drive it about 300 miles this weekend, trying to eliminate any possible breakdowns. Dosen't seem to affect performance any. I know the taste and smell of most fluids and this is a new one. The only other source of oil in this area is ac oil?

If there's oil from your a/c you will be losing refrigerant also. Signs of oil on fittings is usually the first signs of refrigerant leaks. Depending on whether its on the high or low side of the system determines how fast it will disappear. You should notice the diminished performance before too long if it's from the a/c.

Most car a/cs overflow on the passenger side of the dash if they are plugged.

Thanks all. What a great board. would work on Jeep as you all posted messages. Allowed me to find TSB on clogged drain and perform procedure in real time. Background info in case someone is experiencing similar problem. 1996 jeep GC. First started noticing water in front of rear passenger seat. Would puddle right in front of seat. Suspected clogged drain but could never find drain. Next noticed small puddle of grey light oil, very sweet to taste under jeep right front under radiator. Suspect it to be AC lubricant leaking. Jeep has always had an AC leak which I have to add refrigerant in summer. Will last all summer. Also added 8oz. oil this summer. I think that was 6oz. too much from my reading. Jeep AC would not drain normally and could not be seen dripping under vehicle. Performed TSB repair. Pulled back carpet front passenger seat. Completely soaked in water. Found round plastic duct. Drilled 1/4 hole through duct. Rodded with coat hanger. Drain is said to be forward and down from drilled hole. Drains into frame rails. Cannot access from bottom. Recovered 36 oz of clear water from drilled hole. Steady stream for appx. 1 min. Sealed hole with RTV. Ran AC. AC is now draining properly and visibly outside the vehicle in the ussual place whre you see most vehicles draining. Suspect oil is from AC and perhaps will diminish now that AC drains properly. May also point to the location of leak. Probably isn't worth fixing the leak as vehicle is 10 yrs old now. summer is almost over. Anyway this procedure for unclogging drain really works.

Where did you find that TSB? I'd like to read it.
Thanks.

There is a procedure for cleaning the drain from the passenger front seat. This is a condensation of the TSB repair procedure developed by Jeep to service the drain from inside the pax compartment w/o removing evaporator case. I have the procedure on Alldata CDROM but apparently there is no way to download to a file that I could send. Following is the procedure:
1) Pull the carpet on front pax side back to expose the circular duct at thebase of the firewall.
2) Drill a 1/4" hole in the center of the circular duct outlet. Water may run out when you drill this opening.
3) Run a coathanger wire or similar through the drilled hole, and down the tube to "rod" it out. Outlet is forward and slightly downward.
4) After clearing the drain, fashion a plug from some handy material. Parts store has various size rubber plugs. Hot melt glue might work.

This will not work if the blockage is above the 1/4" hole opened in the circular duct. This would indicate lots of debris/dirt in your evaporator case, and you'll have remove the case,... bad news. I spent 30-40 hours all told to disconnect all wiring, remove dash assembly, remove evaporator case, replace evaporator, replace dash, reattach all wiring. Nasty!

Good Luck
