Just got done doing a 500 mile round trip trying to get my 49 8N going. Rebuilt the carb, put it back on and she started right up using the settings in the shop manual. Let it warm up 5 minute or so (was also checking to see if new water pump was working) then decided to take her for a spin. Everything was fine till I tried to load her up by applying the brakes hard at about 3/4 throttle to double check the carb settings. No problem for 15 seconds, then she coughed and sputtered. Now will not run unless I have the choke on all the way. She did the same thing last fall as I was driving her up to the storage place. Because of this I decided to rebuilt the carb. There is plenty of gas in the carb, but she bucks and shakes and dies as soon as you push the choke in even a little ways. The governer appears to be working right. Don't know about the timing, bu don't see how it could jump out of adjustment, then fix itself over 3 months then go out again. Water seems to get real warm real fast. I suspect maybe a head gasket. Sorry about being so wordy, but figured a good description was neded. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Greg,
The fact that you have to pull out the choke to get or keep it running says "lean mixture". Keep looking at the fuel system, to find your problem. Because you had this condition before the carb rebuild and now after the carb rebuild; and it occurred "ABOUT 15 SEC AFTER" braking (to create a load). This points to a fuel supply problem to the carb. As the previous to post say. Clean the line, three inline filters, and look in the tank - dirty?, rust?

I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my carburetor. If you find that it is getting gas and still won't run, turn the mixture control way out and see if it will run. The directions that came with the kit said 2 turns out and was wrong.

unless there are other symptoms you don't report I don't think you should blame the head gasket.

Gas line crud is a good suspect--clean all three filters. Also I would check for vacuum leaks at carb seam and manifold seams before I even bought a head gasket let alone tore it down

Your mileage may vary

Braking hard may had sloshed around gunk in your gas tank causing a blockage at the tank that didn't show up for 15 seconds or so.. Is your gas tank clean? How about the sediment bowl screen? HTH. Curious handle you have. IA/MO? Steve (Clarke Co. IA) 8N 169302
