Just finishing up install of major components before startup oon engine overhaul. New muffler in hand and it seems that it would fit very well installed backwards. The muffler is stamped with inlet and an arrow pointing in the direction of what I would assume to be the inlet of the muffler coming from exhaust manifold. However it will not fit that way without alot of franging and cussing and possible a tailpipe expander (30 miles away!!) Will it make a difference if I install muffler backwards? THe guts appear to be the same looking in the muffler from both ends. I am thinking I got a mis built muffler with mounting flanges on wrong ends - it's marked Stanley Muffler Alumonized. Any thought on installing backwards or how best to make it fot correctly?

Just curious, were there different muffler configurations available on these beasts? My 8N has it's exhaust coming down and below the running board out the back on the right side.

The exhaust system on the 53 Jubilee through the early 60's 4 cylinder Fords had a totally different set up than the 9N, 2N and 8N.

The muffler attaches directly to the exhaust manifold and a "U" shaped exhaust pipe connects to the muffler outlet and curved around the front of the engine and back to the rear.

It (NAA exhaust) has three 90 degree turns where the 8N has only one. There is a heat shield between the muffler and the gas tank to help dissipate the heat from the muffler.

In my view, the N exhaust system is a better designed system than the NAA's/600’s/800’s series. But, I'm not going to argue with Henry.

Rango,
Yer's is standard 8N configuration. Naa has the exhaust on the left side. Kit is available for the 8N for a vertical exhaust fer folks that don't like fire in the wheat field.

I would not install the nuffler bacwards - doing so will create too much backpressure. As for leaks - if it's a working tractor and you're not worried about asthetics, put some jb weld were the the muffler and the pipe mmet and it will quiet it down.

About the only thing on my Jubilee that I really don't like the design of is the location of the muffler and exhaust pipe; right up under the gas tank and close to the fan blade.

I suppose one could redesign this configuration, but then it wouldn'd be factory correct.

My Jubilee exhaust seems to be a little noiser than my 8N also. Or, maybe it is all in my head.

Probably noiser because of exhaust leaks. I aquired two correct 360 degree original NOS muffler clamps to try to stop these leaks, and while it did work much better than those common C style clamps, it still has leaks on both sides of the muffler. I have tried everything, and finally resolved myself to just living with it.

I too used the correct NH muffler clamps and I too still have some small exhaust leakage at both ends of the muffler; I too have decided to live with it.

It's amazing how much we have in common:-).

Hey Reid - the NAA exhaust connections are sized differently at each end of the muffler - for just that reason. So you don't put it in back'ards. Imagine exhaust flow going in the direction of the arrow - that is the correct direction.

Reid..... ....donnna know about yer NAA muffler, but generally arrows indicate the direction of flow. From manifold as an inlet TO tailpipe as an outlet. Which is kinda what I think you are describing as the eazy-fitt way but not the labeled way.

As for installing yer muffler backwards 'cuz it fits that way, do it. It may be more NOISY because the perferations are angled backwards..... ...Dell
