On my early 8N there are 4 bolts holding the brake drum to the hub, mine were rusted in and i had to drill the heads in order to remove the drums. Are these bolts, necessary? It seems the drums would never move once the wheels are bolted in place. Also, are there any special tricks to stop the gear oil from leaking? I will put in new oil seals of course but wondered if there was anything else I should be doing?

Don B: told me to make a halfmoon dam to stop the excessive flow of oil, but still alow some to get to bearings.

If you have an early 8N that does not have a inner seal they do tend to leak. Zane suggested wrapping the axel with teflon tape and squirting a tube of silicon in to build a dam. If you do this you will need to grease the bearing because the fluid will not pass the dam to the bearing. I have not tried this yet but will soon. Also make sure the hub is in good shape. I have an early 1949 N that I have replaced the seals on several times. Even though I run a little low of fluid it will still leak if I park it of a slight grade to one side.

Those bolt are not needed the wheel when bolted back on hold it just fine. As far as the oil the big thing is not to over fill the rear end etc.
