A few days ago someone posted a link about how acetone improves gas mileage. It was within another thread so it didn't seem to get any attention. I read the article and it really makes me wonder if there is any truth to it. Anybody have any opinions or experience?

Robert

I read the article with interest! Might pick up a can o' acetone next time I venture to town. I love these "alternative" things! I beleive the Big Oil Companies are Profiting Waaaay too much! Thanks for posting it!!! The author sounds like he has his "feet on the ground", and has much experience with the stuff!!

Cargo, the person that wrote that article most likely did much research before putting his fingers to the keyboard..and i believe he may have something,,i believe that it will work ,somewhat, but my concern is the breaking down of nearly every thing it comes in contact with...toyota for one uses plastic fuel filters....like smoking in the human body.trying it once or twice may not effect you...but long term not might but will kill you..mike

I sent the link to my mechanic and am waiting to see what he thinks about it. I thought the article was very interesting. I have also heard that slpit-fire plugs make a difference in mileage.

Here's a link to another site. Got this through a Mopar site I frequent. Some guys are calling it the miracle additive. Me? I'm skeptical, but must admit that I haven't tried it.

I am a bit skeptical of the acetone thing too. Great if it works, but that stuff dissolves almost everything. I would be afraid of some crucial little gizmo getting all gooey and plugging up something not originally intended to be gunked up. Please let us know if it truly works. Any $$ I can keep out of Exxon's pocket puts a smile on this old face.

Robert, i read that attachment you put with this, i don`t understand all i read sometimes and maybe i could be reading something into it... but if it breaks down paint , plastic and a number of other things would it not break down all the rust and dirt that collects in a tank, unless new, and clog up the fuel system.. and what about the diaphram in the pump ,would it not eat that too.....and then there is the internal parts of the carb, or injecters...mike

I am the one who posted the link a couple days ago. Like I said - I had not tried it, and also wonder about any "foreign" stuff in the fuel system if not kept clean especially in old tractors, etc. I did note that the amount of 2-3 oz per 10 gallons is probably not strong enough to do much. For several years now I have on occassion ran a product of Berryman's called B-12 Chemtool in my fuel in my trucks with good luck. I read the label and noticed it contains acetone, so I suppose I have been using a small amount of acetone in my fuel for years now to keep the injectors, etc clean, and one truck I use this in now had over 230,000 miles on it, and I cannot say I have had any fuel system problems as it has the original injector (only one in the 4 cylinder throttle body). I do change out the fuel filters on occassion. Just interesting reading, and I am going to drop a few ounces in my 2003 pickup and see what if any mileage change I get. I drive it roughly 75 miles per day to and from work.

FC, interesting reading,,,230,000 miles, i would say that it has been tried... i was going to try it in my mower but realized that the only thing on the place that does not have a plastic tank on it is the N and i can`t afford to fowl that up...i use it about 4-5 hours a day, the rest of the day i hold a chain saw and they all have plastic gaslines..... mike

I have used acetone for years to clean really cruddy carbs. out with (prier to rebuilding). I used a very heavy dose in a old push mower once to see what it would do. Not much. I would think the increase in gas milage is due to the carb. or injectors being cleaned up. Also be careful with chem. tool and don't add to much. Sometimes can help clog catalitic (sp) converters. The only thing I can really say helps cut fuel use is synthentic oil. Switched my lawn tractor over to mobil 1 about 6 yrs ago and the amount of fuel used for the same time run, amount of grass cut, and mower speed, was cut in half. Thats no lie. I may start using it again in my good car due to fuel costs. With cheap gas it didn't seem worth it using 4/5 $ a quart oil.
