Has anyone ever heard of putting orings on the hydraulic pump pistons? Many years ago when I was not interested in old ford tractors, I remember hearing about someone at a JR colllege doing this and how pleased everyone was with his rebuild. Thanks,
Happy Easter!

If you are talking about O rings on the ram piston, this is a common fix for hydraulics that won't hold in the up position without the pump being on or that are weak and won't lift all they should. There are 2 types of rams/o rings, the original older model that takes 3 metal rings and the newer NAA version that takes a rubber O ring and a leather backer ring. The concensus is the newer is better, and many Ns have been converted. My 49 was sometime in it's past. You won't know what you got until you get in there. The I&T FO-4 manual is invaluable. I've not had to work on the hydraulic pump itself, but the diagrams in the manual don't show any o rings, and I don't recall anyone on this board mentioning it. They'll let me know if I'm wrong. >G< HTH Steve 8N 169302
