Installing a 9N distributer cap

Anyone have a tip on getting the distributer cap back on my 9N. Something seems to be holding it off, so I can't latch it. Mine has (2) dust shields (1) fiber and (1) rytex.

Does the cap have to be off to replace the distributer. I thought about pulling it off and installing the cap, but thought I should ask.

This is my first time to pull a front-mount distributer, so be kind. :)

Thanks,
Robert

Yeah take the cap off to install the distributor. You need to rotate the shaft to the slot. DO NOT tighten the bolts to draw up a stuborn distributor. It will fall into place when lined up right.
Parts book shows one dust cover over the points and one gasket under the cap.
Make sure you got it indexed.

Other than fat fingers or a defective cap, I can't think of any reason why it won't snap back on. You're going to need to pull that distributor sooner or later, so just go ahead & do it now; you will be surprised just how easy it is. Two bolts. That's it. And, unless you really force it back, it can only go back on the engine correctly as it has an off-set tang. You might want to get an I&T FO-4 manual; lots of good info on these old tractors. And, a set of points, condenser & a rotor means you will have the distributor off!
