I'll try to keep this short- 6V, neg ground, original setup. #1: Should thee be continuity from the single post on the back of the genny to the genny case? My plastic? insulator that goes through the back of the case that surrounds the post broke, and I tried to engineer a fix, but not sure if there should be continuity. #2 upon adjusting the 3rd brush, the genny output is either 0 or 10+ volts, nothing in between. All the brushes look good, so don;t know where else to look. #3: would the cutout relat still protect from overcharging the bttery if the 3rd brush can't be adjusted? Thanks for the help.

1) Should there be continunity from 1-terminal 3rd brush genny to ground. Yes and NO. Yes, because it completes the circuit. NO, it should also consist of armature winding and field winding resistance BEFORE reaching ground. AND NO, you're NOT really going to be able to measure that resistance even with an expensive digital ohmmeter. It is VERY LOW RESISTANCE and will look like a short or not even there.

2) Adjust yer 3rd brush for charge amps NOT VOLTAGE output. You MUST have the genny "loaded" by the battery, you can gitt upto 17volts unloaded. Adjust yer 3rd brush for about +2 or +3 amps charge while running. The 3rd brush setting will change when/if your dealer installed optional headlights are on/off.

3) The cut-out relay's ONLY JOB, is to disconnect the genny from the battery when you turn yer engine OFF, to prevent the battery from discharging thru the genny gutts overnite. It will NOT PREVENT OVERCHARGING. That is what the manual 3rd brush control is for the operator to adjust.

You do realize that yer 9N came from the factory with "POSITIVE GROUND", don't you? Notta abigg deal ...except... yer 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil is internally wired for positive ground and you can loose upto -40% of yer barely addequate 4-nipple sparkies to incorrect polarity. Insufficent sparkies cause hard starting and ruff running.

Its quite eazy to change to POSITIVE GROUND by re-cableing yer 6-volt battery and then "re-polarizing" yer 2-terminal roundcan cutt-outt relay by "arc-sparkin" the 2-terminals with the engine OFF. I use a pair of pliers handles. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

Thanks for he info. My mistake on the original post, it is positive ground. My ammeter is reading around +2 at 3/4 throttle, its about as high is its ever been.
