Hi, I could use a PTO woodchipper but have no clue what to buy. Anybody familiar with the DR chipper or McKissic ones? I think something that could do 4-4 1/2" would be fine. Anything bigger than that becomes firewood. I think my NAA is close to 30hp so I would guess that would be in the okay range for providing power. I have been told to stay away from Jinma. Seems they are good at first then go downhill rapidly.
Thanks

Mike, here is a post I wrote on November 25, 2003. Philip.

I finally got to use my PTO chipper this weekend. I had a work day at my house on saturday, 5 guys showed up to trim limbs and cut trees. I ran the 8N for 6 straight hours with the chipper. The chipper is a Bearcat model with 5" capacity. The 8N and the chipper worked well together. It amazes me that my tractor, designed in 1938, can uses use implements purchased in 2002. What a great design by Harry F. The chipper has a 120 pound flywheel, lots of inertia, does not take much power to turn. When you put in a 5" branch, the rpm's drop, the governor kicks the throttle plate open, the engine starts poppin, and the rpm's come back up, just like it is suppose to work. Neat to stand back and see. The chipper is a nice tool, but it will work you to death. Philip.

Our Homeowners association (a fly in community) bought a wallenstein BX60 to use on the back of our 65 hp Massey diesel tractor.

We got lucky, only paid $2400 for it, we suspect the dealer made a mistake, they are bringing alot more than that.

It isn't like using one of those commerical chippers by far, those things (and some real pricey PTO chippers too) have a hydraulic feet to take the brush and feed it to the cutters. The cheaper and simpler units require you stuff it (carefully) into the chipper. Long straight stuff just gets sucked right in, many times limbs with side branches have to be cut up.

You get what you pay for, more $ spent means less work on the tail end, less $ spent means more work later on. Your choice.

Frequent or professional use would dictate a hydraulic feed roller system, otherwise it would be useless.

This is the only unit I have any experience with and it works well.

Charles

I bought the DR chipper two years ago and have ground alot of limbs even the larger 4" stuff. The bigger pieces have to go slow but I have run trees that were in the 2" range through without any problem. In the 2 years I have had it I replaced one belt and sharpened the blades once and the first year it was in use 3 to 4 days a week.

Was it the PTO driven one? Did you get the one that can shoot the stuff into a truck? DR has a good sales pitch. No interest payments for a year, I think. Plus they are discounted pretty frequently, so I wonder what the regular price is for real. Thanks I will give them another look.
