Need some help. No compression in cylinders 1 and 3, so I removed the manifold and valve covers, and it looks like I have no valve movement at all when I turn over the engine. My first thought is that the cam is not turning. Any ideas. Some of the valves are open and some are closed, so I would think if the cam was turning, that maybe they could all be stuck open, but not some open and some closed.

I just had the same problem on my 8N. The valves stuck in the guides - intake only. Yes, the oil has something to do with it, but the more likely culprit is the low quality gasoline we get these days. ALWAYS put an ounce or two of Marvel Mystery Oil in your gas tank when adding fuel. It will keep the valve stems clean, and no more stuck valves. I had to remove the head and pull the valves and guides to fix mine. Good Luck!

So when I look at the valve springs with the 2 covers off, I see the spring, and toward the bottom, a round piece about an inch across. some of them are down flush, and others are about 1/2 an inch up. I would have thought that with the engine turning over, I would see some movement, or all of them would be up about 1/2 of an inch. I had someone else turning the engine over, and there was no movement with any of them, even the cylinders that have compression.

Roger..... ...to gitt compression, your valves MUST go up and down. You gott compression on #2 & #4, therefore your camshaft MUST be going round'n'round. Its NOT unusual for valves to be "stuck" open from "varnish" caused by OLD OIL. Yer camshaft only lifts yer valves about 1/4" and can be difficult to see in yer valve spring chests.

Me? I'd flush the valvesprings good with MMO. (Marvel Mystery Oil is one of the few panther-pi$$es that work, IMHO) I'd use a pressure-pumper oilcan to squirt'em thru the springs.

And while yer lack of compression could be caused by burned exhaust valves or even (heaven forbid) burned thru pistons. My money is on a $5 can of MMO..... ...Dell

I keep hearing about the virtues of Marvel Mystery Oil. What's in it? (I know, don't tell me - it's a mystery. But really, how is it different from "regular" oil?) And where can you buy it?
