I can no longer shift into 1st or 3rd gear on my 8N. Reverse, 2nd and 4th are fine. The problem came on suddenly . Any thoughts?

Hi Rick,

The same shift rail shifts the trans into 1st & 3rd. It sounds like something is jammed or stuck. Since it will shift into 2nd & 4th & R, the trans is not hung up in two gears at the same time.

As Rob said, you can remove the top trans/shifter cover and get a good look inside. 1st & 3rd are engaged by the round rod shaped shift rail at the top of the trans housing. That mechanism may be stuck. The shifter handle fits into a slot in the rod and slides the rod back and forth as a shifter fork (connected to the rod) moves a coupler back and forth for 1st & 3rd gear.

Good luck with it.

Rick

I think you shoud lift the cover and take a look see. Don"t let the little ball and spring get away from you.
