Borrow my 8N?

This weekend, I had a neighbor (who has been living in our community about a year)to vist me and stated she had an unusal request of me. I had no idea what she was about to say. Then she asked if her husband could borrow my 8N. She stated that he was killing himself trying to plow a garden spot with a tiller. Gentlemen, I am usually a very soft hearted and generous person, always willing to help a neighbor or anyone else who needs help. But to let a little known individual, let alone a so-called neighbor, borrow my 8N that just underwent a major restoration! I do'nt think so. I told her that there are some things I just do not loan out and my 8N is one of them. However, I am not all bad. I offered to plow the spot for them. She was right, that was an unusual request as far as I was concerned. I wonder why her husband did'nt have the guts to ask me himself? Thought you'all might be interested in hearing this story. I had just the opposite happen to me. My brother-in-law offered the use of his Ford 3000 to me anytime I needed it. I told him I really appreciated his offer, but I felt it would be the same as wearing his underwear.

I believe the reason HE didn't ask is because HE knew better.
There are a lot of people who are ignorant of the value, worth, and liability of expensive machinery.I used to be a real good neighbor, but I just can't afford it anymore. I don't lend out anything with an engine or a motor,I would rather come do it for them than have them return with it broken .

A little late with this post, but hopefully some will still see it. I have been in the same situation, made the same offer, and did the work for the asking person. The person who owned My N before me wasn't so lucky and I am still seeing results of his generosity. He loaned it to a neighbor to brushhog 5 acres. The neighbor ended up wrecking the tractor and just barely escaped serious injury. My front bumper is still bent and the headlights just kinda dangle (repairs will happen eventually.) I won't lend my tractor or my truck, ever. A relative borrowed my lawn tractor to mow his 1.5 acres last summer. I am still repairing the damage done. Now, I won't lend my mower either.

Did you smell booze on her breath? You know that stuff will make you ask and do things you normally would'nt or should'nt. LOL...

Loaning something as potentially dangerous as a tractor is a no no. You probably saved his life and your tractor. After a year or so I'm continually discovering how dangerous the tractor can be.

The real problem is diplomacy and you handled that well.

Have heard it said that "Some men would rather part with their wife than their tractor."

C'mon , borrow my N?? Get real! I'd think you would have better luck asking for one of my kidneys. I'll help out with my N but NOBODY drives her but me.

Maybe the guy was really working his tail off, and his wife was just looking out for him. I would never ask to borrow someone elses equipment, but I don't think my wife would get that. But she does look after my health.

I have a neighbor who asked the same thing of me. My reaction was the same as yours, but to him it was not a big deal. He just sees it as a tractor...you know, farmers run those thing, so hard can it be to operate?

jeesh.....the nerve! lol

Take Care

This past weekend a neighbor had three trailer loads of sand delivered. He is a good neighbor and I keep him plowed out all winter. I would not let him borrow my "N". I told him it was 50+ years old. I did offer to move the the sand for him. I ended up blowing a loader piston (prior owner tightened the packing fitting with a pipe wrench in middle of the fitting instead of the end). I don't know what would have happened if he was running the tractor instead of me.
B.T.W. Anyone know of a good place to find wagner loader parts?

I am happy to help out a neighbor with my 8N or any of my tools, but I can't get past that. I am not able to loan out tools, did it once and it came back broken and there was no offer to repair or replace it from the guilty party. I am happy to help but I don' lend out tools.

Neither a borrower nor lender be, and...Good fences make good neighbors.

You handled the situation wisely. It gives you more time to play with your tractor and help them out.

Or do you think her husband just wanted to play with your toy?

Did they accept your offer? That'll tell you what he really wanted.

I learned this lesson the hard way. An older fellow down the road made the same request of me a couple of years back.He assured me he had owned an 8N in the past, etc.. He showed up 3hours later with the thing stuck in two gears. 6 weeks and $500 later, I was back in business. Didn't offer to pay for the repair and even implied it was already broke until I pointed out to him that it won't start in gear. Needless to say, there is very little communication with the old fellow anymore. Guess I should have risked "ruining" the friendship by turning him down. The results would have been the same except I'd have saved $500 and had the use of my tractor the last half of the summer. Live and learn.

tough spot...

As I have learned from reading this board, most N owners are generous people who are willing to help. I am glad you found a way to be helpful while maintaining personal space boundaries. Of course, I am always looking for a reason to use my 2N for something more than riding.

If it happens again in the future, perhaps tell the "asker" that you would be worried about another operator hurting himself on the tractor.

Very nice way of handling that situation. I have recently had the opportunity to put on my "borrow my 8N - are you @#$@$@ crazy?" mask myself. I too performed the requested task for them myself. Well, my neighbor was also a woman - but she is actually the one that does 90% of the yard/garden work - so I understood that case. Hmmmmm . Maybe he feels awkward about asking another man for his tractor since he knows exactly what the answer will be. (ahhh NO.) --- so let the wivey go over, maybe she can sweet talk it out of him. (grin)

In any case, you performed an admirable feat by maintaining neighborly relations and completing the job for them. (maybe they knew that all along - haha you might be installing 150 fence posts pretty soon if they see you have a post hole digger -- haha)

Well, thanks for sharing.
Andy

There are some things a man knows better than to ask. One of them is to borrow another's 8N. On the other hand, maybe she was attracted to its classic lines, sensuous power, rugged unpretentious simplicity...
