53 NAA here that we are talking about. So i got my choke problem fixed and adjusted the carb per Dell's specs and it runs great now, don't need choke 1/2 out anymore.

Now on to the questions at hand. In lookin at the right side tire and brakes, the brake is mushy indicating to me it either needs adjustin or new pads. I know there is an adjustin thingy on the back side under the fender area with a screw thingy that has to be turned, but much to my dismay it is stuck/froze. I tryed penetratin oil and no such luck. I'm thinking the only way to make sure it gets un froze is to take wheel off/hub assembly off/drum off and actually look at the brake and adjust it that way.

Now, my tire seems to be stuck, i've put penetratin oil on, using a big honkin socket and breaker bar, i slipped a long piece of steel pipe over and tried to use leverage but it didn't work. Any other thoughts, also, i'm not sure what direction, is it righty tighty lefty loosen or the opposite?? I know on some old tractors they used a reverse thread on these.

thanks in advance.

so, what your saying, is that i should be able to take the drum off when i take the wheel lug nuts off, right?? Kind of like a car and trucks drum brake? Wheel holds the drum on.

You are correct - that is how it works.

Good luck,
Dan

Do yourself a favor and before you worry about the big honking nut in the center, remove the wheel and drum to inspect your pads first. You might have trouble getting the drum off if you cannot back the brake adjuster off. I have had success with a 3 lb. hand sledge around the rim of the drum to work it loose. Not HARD pounding, just work it around the entire edge of the drum. You do not have to remove the hub to replace your brake pads, and getting the hub tight again takes a lot of work and several re-tightening events after driving it a bit over the course of a week or so.

Good luck,
Dan

Ryan,

You don't have to take off the big nut to work on the brakes. If your seals are not leaking, and you have no bearing issues, then leave it alone. If you force it, you might strip the threads (like I did) or break something.

Tire is stuck.. hmm.. Are you saying that you can't get the lug nuts off.. or that you got the lug nuts off and the rim is rusted to the hub?

If you did get the nuts off.. put them back on.. but leave them with about 1/8" play and then drive around a bit.. you will hear the clunk when the rim breaks free from the hub.

I fthe nuts are stuck ( all of them? ) then try the penetrating oil.. perhaps even some heat from a propane plumbers torch.. then the big pipe and socket.

They have to come off... if you break them off.. gotta have the hub off anyway to replace them...

sorry, gettin confused here. Not the lug nuts holding the wheel and tire on, i'm talkin about that big honkin nut that is in the center that hold the whole assembly to the drive shaft i'm assumin.

I used the weight of the tractor to break the big nut loose. I took a Sears breaker bar and used a scissors jack to jack on the end of the handle. Be sure tractor is in gear and wheels are blocked. I had the jack on top of several 4x4's I had nailed together so I could get the bar in the 4 or 5 o'clock position befor I started jacking. If you bend or break the Sears bar you can just take it back for a replacement.
After this I bought a 5' black iron pipe to use as a cheater.

Do yourself a HUGE HUGE favor.. and take the tire and rim and center off first.. THEN work on that 450# monstor. However.. DO get it to budge a bit while the wheel is still on. My gues is that since it takes the average person a 4' pipe and a big grunt to tighten.. then it is going to take the reverse +bigger grunt to loosen.

If it is the oem nut.. make sure the wire retainer clip has been removed... You should be able to tell if it is a 2-piece 'squeezem' repair nut, or the oem one with a wire channel in it.

All else fails.. you can cut and split the nut with a hacksaw blade and cold chissle.. angle grinder and chissle.. etc.

which way would be the way to turn it to get it off. Facing the well, turn to left to loosen or to right.
