Just bought 1950 8n Friday. SUPPOSE to have a rebuilt motor, hyd. pump, etc. Brush hog creeps down when tractor is not running. in about 3-4 minutes. Is this an easy fix? Also, leaks fluid around center of rear wheel right hub. Outside of wheel. Runs great. New paint , new wheels and tires. New hoses, belt, wires, etc. Still 6 volt system. Friend with a 49 8n says let it creep down. Just onhook shaft when traveling, and leave lift in up position. I think I would rather fix it. What say you??? Thanks, Rick

3-4 minutes leak down is not horrible.. but does indicate it may need a new lift piston.. even if the hydro pump was rebuilt. Leak at hub is axle seal...

Rick..... ..yer friend is semi-correct. You really don't wannna be driving down the street/road/pasture with yer brushhogg blades twirling and slingin' stuff. So you NEED to disconnect yer PTO driveshaft. This will allow the internally PTO driven hydraulic pump to continue to PUMP and hold up the weight on yer 3-point lift.

But.....I agree, iff'n you don't think yer hydraulics is working correct or satisfactorilly for you, checker out. Remove the 6" round dipstick plate and look for squirts while trying to lift yer brushhogg. There's 2-potential squirters. The hydraulic piston or the side of the chamber hydraulic stand-pipe where is goes thru the paper filter into yer butt-buckett top-plate.

This'll gittcha started, but you really should consider the merits of having yer very own personal copy of the I&T FO-4 manual that has more detailed hydraulic and engine repairs explained. Available from sponsors of this great N-Board, many agricultural emporiums. Amazon.com, BordersBooks, WalMart books. www.n-news.com also has great archive of implement manuals. Why even yer Ford/New Holland dealer usually sells it; isn't that AMAZING? Even my local John (byte my tongue) Deere dealers parts counter has it for sale. $22, cheap. Gittcha one and readitt!!!..... ...respectfully, Dell
