8N won't run without choke

I have an 8N that will not stay running without the choke on. It appears that the govener is pulsing between full open and closed. If I manually hold the butterfly that is controlled by the govener open it runs good but revs high. What should I be looking at or trying to fix.

OK Rob,
To follow up my last post:
I ordered a new replacement carb from Antique Tractor supply 140 bucks plus 13 bucks shipping(a knockoff of the original MS unit on the tractor).

I ordered it monday - and it was here on wednesday - bolted it on - and the tractor fired up and runs great - no more need to choke.

Thats how I solved cmy "no run W/O a choke issue

If your ignition system checks out, look for a leaky/cracked intake manifold or a leaking gasket/connection at the carburetor attach flange to the intake manifold. Both can cause air to leak around the carburetor and lean the mixture.

Rob..... ...sounds like yer governor is trying to do its job.

Requiring choke to keep running is usually a WEAK SPARKIES ISSUE. Rich mixture is eazier to ignite with weak sparkies.

Eazy check. Make yerself a calibrated sparkie tester by bending enny sparkie side-electrode OUT for FULL 3/16"-gap. Now ground yer metal sparkie shell with somesort of clamp, connect enny sparkie wire; crank yer engine and WATCH yer sparkies jump the gap. Do they jump with blue-snott authority? or are they a wimpy yellowish-orangish poor excuse?

And while yer lean-burn issue maybe clogged carburator passages, one of the founding members of this great N-Board ussta claim 80% of all carb problems were ultimately found in the ignition system..... .....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell knows of what he speaks - but:
I am having the same problem. I looked for week ignition switch and spark - unfortunately that wasn't the issue for my tractor. So I checked the fuel flow to the carb - fuel was getting from the tank to the carb - so I needed to look into the carb. I couldn't budge the drain plug on the bottom of the bowl - so I took the carb off - opened it up - andit was rusted up inside - not rust particles floating in the gas - but the insides of the carb was all rusted up.

A rebuild kit costs 40 bucks - a rebuilt carb costs between 175 and 225 depending on the source. A new carb cost 140 bucks.

I opted for the new carb - antique tractor parts (sponsors this forum) and myoldfords.com both have replacements available.

My carb should be here tommorrow - I'll let you know if it cures the problem.
