8n Oil pan gasket leak???

First of all, many thanks to all the knowledgeable folks posting on these boards. I really enjoy and learn a lot on here. Thought I'd ask before I get in way over my head...

My 8N leaks a lot of oil at the front end of what I think is the oil pan gasket, though it appears that the oil pan gasket meets another gasket at the front? Maybe both are leaking, or is this just a multi-piece oil pan gasket? Can the oil pan gasket be replaced simply as on most cars, or is/are there more gaskets, and more to consider... down there? I'm not a real tech guy so I don't want to get in over my head, but I could replace "a" gasket...

Can anyone point me to an illustration or diagram of this that might give me a clue?

Thanks so much.

-AJ

The first thing I would do AJ, is clean the immediate area around the leak. It will allow any fresh oil to show up immediately and might help you in pin-pointing it's actual origin.

The next thing to keep in mind is that the front lip seal and front pulley seal (on the timing cover) are quite often "rope" type seals on an N.
These are susceptable to thermo-cycling failure like any gasket, and don't seem to hold up as long as the pan rail gaskets do. You may want to pay special attention to these.

An oil pan on an N is pretty meaty and gives you a good surface for the gasket to adhere to, so it's rare to see an oil leak out the side at the top of the oil pan, but it does happen.

Hope this helps AJ!

Sorry, my mistake in reply to AJ Spence, 09-15-2005 12:05:50
On second thought, the front crank shaft seal between the block and oil pan is the front pulley seal.

I stand corrected.

Hi AJ,

There is a possibility that what you think is an oil pan gasket leak may be the front crank shaft seal or crank shaft pulley seal or timing cover gasket.

The front crank shaft seal is made up of two parts, an upper (goes in top of block) and a lower (goes in front of oil pan). There is also a timing cover gasket and seal for the crank shaft front pulley. So, there are 4 possible places where your front oil leak could originate from. (Not to mention the govenor seals) HTH.
