49 8N How hot should coolant get after running various speeds for about a half an hour? After running, I could open the pressure cap with no steam and drained some out of the bottom of the radiator, and it was not near hot. The block was hot to touch. I just changed the thermostat. Could this be a faulty stat or the water pump?
The whole system acts as if not under pressure.

Rattzie..... ...sounds like you gottchur NEW thermostat mounted BASSACKWARDS. Its pointy end toward the radiator and mounted at the cylinderhead end of the radiator hose. You doubt? With yer radiator cap OFF, fill-up yer radiator so your finger can stick into the water. (normal radiator water level is about 4" below neck and just covers the radiator core with lotta of headroom for water expansion) Start yer engine. You should beable to feel "warm" water innna'bout 2-minutes. Stop yer engine after 5-mins and STAND-BY for water gyser eruption. (don't ask how I know)..... ..Dell

What mix of distilled water and coolant should I use? South Central Michigan climate. Right now I have straight antifreeze/coolant.

Ratzie..... .....I would use 50/50 anti-freeze and H2O. Iff'n you'll read yer anti-freeze bottle printed instructions, 50/50 is good for -30F. And even then it don't freeze, it slushes. Greater concentrations of anti-freeze reduces the BOILING temperature which is moot with the 4psi radiator system our N-Tractors have. Yer 14psi modern automobile may be effected howsomevers..... ...Dell

Who REMINDS YOU, in freezing weather ALWAYS start in REVERSE GEAR, this will "un-stick" yer frozen rear tires so yer tractor doesn't rear-up and roll-over backwards on you.

The temp should run around 160-180 Degrees. Normally there is a 15 degree temp difference between the top and bottom of the radiator tanks. The stat may be in backwards, or the water pump might not be working right.
