I have aquired an 8N ford tractor less the coil.It has a short secondary wire and primary wire on the distributor. But for the life of me,I can't figure out where the coil would mount to.Since the exhaust manifold and dist. are in such close proximity,it seems there is no place to mount this inconvenient necessity. Can anyone show me or tell me where this contraption goes.(I don't really believe that it gets duct taped to the axle).

I'm assuming you have a "side mount" distributor.

Here's a photo from the "parts and pieces" section of this very site.

Note the bracket the finger is pointing to, NOT where the coil is laying.

Thank you so much Bob.I purchased the repair manual I&T FO-4 and owners manual. My brother and I have been poring over the books for the last 3 days.We have found nothing in pictures or print telling us where this coil is located.Since the hood and fuel tank are off,we have been scouring the engine as to where it might go.To make a long story short, insects had filled the hole with mud,and somebody painted the engine. All that I had seen was what looked like a casting dimple. After your picture I got a punch, and poked at the dimple and "voila".Needless to say I now have a mounting point for my coil.Thank you again Bob for taking the time and trouble to show me and explain this vexing problem. Ric.

You're lucky someone hasn't swapped the cylinder head for an older (front-mount) version! You'd look a long time for the coil mounting holes in one of those! (BTDT!)

This tractor was my fathers,(in Ky.)and I bought it off my siblings. The tractor didn't run,and I only paid $500 for it. The problem was I agreed to pay this guy $1000 to fix it up and repaint the tractor back to its original colors. I hadn't retired yet,(from Mi.)so this man came over and picked up the tractor and took it back to his shop. 13 months later I retired and moved to Ky. 8 months later I got tired of waiting for it and went to see the man. When I went there,it was a basket case. So I paid him only for the new parts. Then I had him load the pieces back on his trailer and bring it back. Less the old coil (which was bad). But the 8N is very different from my 600 series tractor, hence my coil problem. Thanks again Bob. ric
