Hi All,

Well, I did the yearly oil change in the 49 8N this weekend and I noticed a slight noise in her that I had not noticed before. At first, I thought it might be the clutch release bearing or the pilot bearing.

It turned out to be the water pump bearing. I shut it off and grabbed a hold of the fan blade assembly and wiggled it good and, sure enough, it was loose and a little anti-freeze was dripping out.

I have a busy week ahead of me, so, I'll plan on changing it out next weekend.

I think I'll take the advice of the concensus here on the forum and get a remanufactured pump instead of trying to rebuild it myself.

I just turned 49 (09/02/05); If the new pump lasts 29 more years, I won't have to worry about it again until I am 78. (I wonder if will last that long:-)

Rick

If you are like me, learning how to rebuild the pump would be interesting - just so I knew how it works and that it was done right. If you do not have the time - just replace it, I would say you got your money out of the old one. However; do not expect a new modern pump to last anywhere as long as the original - they just don't make them like they used to...

Don't feel tto old - I am 40 and just last year I was 35 :-)

Good luck,
Dan

Must not have been much good if it only lasted 28 years..Should still be under warranty.....

I don't know exactly how old the water pump is. I bought the tractor 28 years ago and have never replaced the water pump.

However, I have learned from experience that a warranty is only as good as the warrantor. Which, in some cases, may not be very good.

Rick

No, not THAT old.
My tractor is a '50N, and I'm a '53.

Hey, my brother says he's got a photo of my father on an 'N when my folks lived in Lincoln, Mass, after WW II, before I was born. I gotta GET that photo, I keep forgetting to bug him about it...
