9N - Question

I was trying to take off the large nut on the front of the crank the other day, and thought that if I put it in gear, that would stop the crank from turning. To my surprise, the crank still turns, and I can even turn over the started with it in gear. IS this normal ? If not, any ideas on what might be wrong. Thanks

Yes it is normal - you are just moving your tractor forward (it turns so slow you are not noticing it). Dell says stuff some soft rope down a spark plug hole to keep your engine from turning (of course leave a little out so you can pull it back out). I have used this trick and it works. Others have removed the starter and blocked the flywheel to keep it from turning. Also, an air impact wrench will usually spin it off by itself.

BTW - get you a new saftey starter so you CAN NOT turn the starter over with it in gear (if you have a later 9N with the saftey starter by the shifter) - that is a good way to get you run over, or at the very least ram your tractor into something.

Good luck,
Dan
