my wife is getting her tonsiles removed tomorrow. The doc said no big deal for kid but for an adult the risk of bleeding is greater . anybody out there have experance with this.

I had mine out when I was 26 and lost 12 lbs and 4 days of work. While I was in the hospital flat on my back, afraid I wouldn`t die, there was a 9 yr old kid running up and down the hall that had his out that morning. LOL

I had mine out when I was 21. Mine had gotten so infected, the doctor lanced them in his examining room several weeks before.
I got a local and sat in a chair as they snipped them and rolled them out. Later, I was wandering around the halls until the anastisia (sp)wore off. O-oo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o! My then fiance (now wife) stayed with me (and still 41 years later). What do they call that syndrom about a nurse/patient relationship?
I still experience an occasional sore throat but very mild. Also, since I quit smoking 20 years ago, all colds and flu are less severe.
More than you wanted to know.

Had mine removed when I was 58. No big deal. The last thing I remembered was being wheeled on the gurney down the hall to the OR. I came to wondering why they hadn't taken out my tonsiles yet when in fact they had. The next day had the heaves from the anethesia but that was it. Much better without them and should've had it done sooner.

Medical risks are always greater for adults than for children. Here is a reliable website with basic information about it: >Link
/www.otohns.net/default.asp?id=13089.>Link There's a lot of scary (inflammatory-scary) stuff on the web out there about this, so be careful about your sources. Basically, I bet your wife's surgeon is trying to prepare you guys for the idea that it won't be a "simple" procedure the way we thought about it back 30 or 40 or more years ago, in children. Think of it as surgery and as creating symptoms very similar to those of the infections she's treating this way, and you shouldn't have any surprises. If you aren't clear about the reasons the doctor wants to do this, though, you should get more information. Like any surgical procedure, it isn't to be done lightly. A site from the Cleveland Clinic can help you assess those reasons if you're not satisfied. It's more technical, but I can help you if you decide you need it and have questions; let me know off-list if you want that url. (I was a biology/anatomy prof for many years.) As far as bleeding goes, I found indications that the problem with this isn't how often adult patients bleed after surgery, but that fact that when they do they have to be anesthetized for the bleeding to be stopped by a more minor surgical procedure. It means, though, that if bleeding occurs after you're back home you should go right back to the hospital without delay. It probably won't just stop on its own. -- Dawn

I can certainly understand that. I used to do medical advocacy sometimes -- talking to peoples' doctors to ask their questions, then interpreting (explaining) the answers. Anything I can do to help, let me know. (Why did the doctor say she needs this?)

I had UP3 surgery about 3 years ago and had my tonsiles taken out at that time.
I had to stay a couple of days in the hospital because of the UP3,
but the tonsiles were no big deal.

UP3 = UvuloPharangialPalatioPlasty
Hope I spelled that right.
I have severe obstructive sleep apnea.
The doctor was trying to correct some of it.

If you got a good ENT doctor then no problems.
