No oil pressure, pulled the pan and checked oil pump and pickup tube, gears in pump looked good very little play in bushing so I pulled a rod cap and it has .030 bearings, plastiguaged out to .003 clearance I think this is within specs., pulled a main cap and it has standard bearings, cant figure why they would turn rod journals only, so plastiguaged main and used .002 - .006 plastiguage and it didn’t even touch it so seems to me they installed the wrong main bearings
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I am having 2 problems that should not be related but coincidence or not here they are. When I first start up my 1948 8N Ford I have a perfectly good as new firm clutch. But I will not have any oil pressure. I will then unscrew the oil pressure gage and shoot a blast of air from my compressor into the oil line until I hear it bubble in the oil pan. I will then re-start my tractor and connect the gage and shazam I will have oil pressure only to find out that I have ZERO clutch. As far as I know these 2 problems are not even remotely connected. I did check to see if the clutch was getting wet from any oil leaks in the rear main and there is no sign of any oil causing the clutch to slip, besides that the clutch will be in perfect working condition the next time I start the tractor that is until I have to shut it down to get oil pressure.

1.) It is VERY common for just the jod journals to be ground undersized, or, for that matter just the main journals.

2.) While having the rod bearings that loose certainly is not good, and will cause noise and hasten bearing failure, that alone would not cause "0" oil pressure.

3.) You need to get a micrometer on those rod journals, and see exactly what size they are!

I discovered that it is very common to turn one set of journals and not another. This is because the rod journals will wear in an oval pattern and thus will need to be ground sooner to bring it back into round, whereas the main just spins in a fixed rotation. The rods are just barely within specs, but I would consider them fine on my tractor, but obviously the mains are worn past specs. Get some larger Plastigauge that goes up to .015 or so and see if you can luck out and just install a set of .010 main bearings to get you back into specs - as long as the main journals are not scored of course.

Don't forget to prime the oil pump with heavy oil prior to starting it back up.

Good luck,
Dan
