Is there a quick way to check the oil pump on a 9N. I have the pan off, and i am changing the timing gear and the crank gear, and would like to ensure that the oil pump is okay before reassembling. Tractor did not run when I bought it (due to the fact that the fiber timing gear was half gone probably), so I do not know what the oil pressure was before it went caput.

I think it would be a cheap piece of mind to go ahead and replace it. Just my opinion. :^) Jay

To PROPERLY replace the complete oil pump, the block's main bearing jounals SHOULD be align-bored.

Yes, I know lots of people will say you don't have to, and yes, you can probably "get by" without align-boring it, but if you're concerned enough in the first place to want to replace the oil pump, why not do it correctly?

The oil pump is part of the front main bearing lower half, and, as with ANY rod or main bearing cap, you DO NOT replace the cap without having the assembly bored.

The oil pump driveshaft should have very little "play" in the bushing.

The housing needs to be in good shape, and not worn from the gears cutting into it from worn bushings. Also, the backlash between the gears needs to be within .003" to .004". I don't see a "spec." for gear endplay, but there should be very little, just so the pump turns freely, without binding.

All these suggestions will contribute to good oil pressure, cold and warm, and an oil pump that primes and stays primed.

The FO-4 manual gives the remaining "specs." for shaft and bushing measurements.
