I'm looking for an older, reliable big car to drive to some graduate classes over the next two years (about 75 miles one way several times a week). I don't want to put all those miles on my truck. A long time family friend and co-worker is selling his 89 crown vic for $2700. It is in almost perfect shape with 71k miles. It has all the things you don't need but are fun to play with (power windows, locks ect.) He tells me it is mechanically sound and I trust him. I think this sounds like a good deal, what do all of you think? I've never owned a car but driving this one makes me want to go out parking with my wife on a secluded country road!

I have an 89 Crown Victoria with a FI 302 with the police chip still there. My car's top speed is 178mph but with regualar driving it still manages a very pleasant 20mgp. It has 789,000 miles and I am currently rebuilding both the engine and the trans.+ accesories, body work/re-trimming the chrome, stereo system, interior, and finishing it off with a great paint job. Point is tho, I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for the fact that it made such a great car the first 4 years I owned it and the 8 years it spent as a highway patrol car with Ellis County Sheriffs Office. (I knew the officer who drove it and was even transported from one jail to another in it.) I bought the car 3 months after it finished it's service at auction and have loved it since. thanks.

I own a 89 crown vic. My father brought it for me as a gift. It sat in the previos owners back yard for three years with out being started or any thing. We went down checked it out and the car started right up,the engine sounded beautiful. I've had it for six years since then, it i love it so go and get it you'll love it!

I own a 1988 CV Police Interceptor...

This is the best car Ive ever owned. Simply... Yeah gas is high... but whatcha going to do? This car has my respect & can do quite abit. I like the box style & for me... Its my classic car. The 88-91 are simply the best & even better with the 5.8 V8 351. This thing has above average power... & I beat those who think they can take me on the accel ticket..

I have an 87 CVic wagon with the 302 and trailer towing package. It is fuel injected. It now has over 150,000 mi, uses about 1 qt every 1500 mi, gets an honest 17 mpg on winter gas. It has been our cheapest car to own and maintain. It has original timing chain and the only engine work it ever needed was a new water pump. The auto trans is solid. It starts at -20F and goes anywhere I want it to go. Even all the extra do-dads still work. Our Ford parts man said that he has seen many customers still running their CVics at 300,000. Unfortunately mine is showing serious rust. We have many Fords in this family and have found them to be as good or better than almost any other brand.

Go for it, good ride, very safe car. I'd like to have another one exactly like it, but without the rust.

Paul

Don't buy that Sap Sucker!

I just got rid of a Crown Victoria that I bought from my sister. Nobody in the world could fix it from throwing fits of not starting. This includes me who had never had a car in a shop for repairs in the last 50 years. I call myself a mechanic and made a living doing it all my life. I still see it go by my house and feel sorry for selling it to those unsuspecting folks down the road.

I wouldn't even want to live next door to someone who owns a Crown Victoria of that vintage.

Run away. Don't walk!

Unless you are planning on using it for a demolition derby it is not the car you need. I promise!

My experience with Fords is the timing chain on the v8's is a weak link.Over the years on 3 different cars the timing chains/cam gear went out at 72k,90k and 100,600 miles. If you do buy it, check out the timing chain/cam sprocket.Other than that they are solid...like a rock.

While I LOVE my 8N. I could not in good conscience recommend any other Ford products. Just been bad experience after bad experience with ford cars and trucks. Sorry....
Mike:)
P.S. If you could find a good pontiac that would be better! :)

I am no big fan of ford cars, but here goes (gulp and deep breath).

I recomend the 1989 crown victoria. There, I said it. We have a semi-retired guy here at work who has one. It is a very comfortable car to drive and ride in. It has a traditional, oversized american, big anti-sway bar, can't hear the road feel to it.

Recently he paid about $850 to get all the gaskets and seals replaced on the motor. That and tires are the only service items I have heard it needed in the last 10 years.

Good Luck!

I am an ex ford mech. I have an 89 crown vic wagon
with 140,000 miles. It still runs like a top. Don't let these guys with the "high gas price" scare you off. You will save more money on taxes and insurance than you can save with some newer more fuel effecent car.Been there done that.

Hi Ringy, I'm no expert in regards to the Crown Vic for "consumer" use but in police service they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. We beat the daylights out of the ones at the academy and basically burned the tires off the cars in cornering excersises. My agency had '94 C/V's that ran nearly 24 hours a day 7 days a week and aside from normal wear and tear they never had a serious problem. The engine/rings got tired from the constant running/idling. I doubt the vehicle your friend has to offer has seen that severe service! It appears he's only putting 6K a year on it whereas we put on over 3 times that amount, unfortunately we now have Chevy Luminas... :(
Happy motoring, Jeff
