49 8N. I am wanting to flush my radiator. Is white vinegar the best way to go? Or buy a "brand of radiator flush"? Also I have hard well water, so should I flush it with that or hook up to an indoor soft water line? I know when I mix 50/50 now to use distilled, but what about running the water through it? How crucial is soft water or hard?
Thanks Rick T

white's alright done it many times, use as much as ya want as long as ya attend it, don't leave it in there fer 2-3 hrs and you'll be alright,,,
i used muratic in all mine mine QT/2gal. and lett'r sit for 5 mins that way it will eat just about everything out and will show ya if the previous owners used stop leak in it, it'll come out in hard chunks and will be dark brown/black

If you are mixing v'gar and well water for the flush.. it will be ok.. v'gar will still be acidic.. even diluted.

How much vinegar?
And am I right in understanding that using the well water to flush and rinse will not hurt the innards of the rad and block? I will use 50/50 distilled water when filling?
Thanks again Rick T.

"Hard" water may cause lime/scale buildup int he system over a period of time. The flush with vinegar will help cut some of that.. that's why i wouldn't worry about using tap water for the flush.

As for dilution.. I'd use the same str that your auto-coffee maker reccomends for cleaning.

If you wish to use vinegar for a flush, purchase "pickling" vinegar at the grocery in one-gallon jugs and use it full strength. (It's only 10% strength anyway. Regular vinegar is only 5%. Neither is strong enough to hurt anything, other than dissolve light calcium deposits.) Rinse with water from the garden hose. (Your well water is fine and doesn't need to be softened to be used as a coolant. The only reason calcium builds up is due to years use, with frequent replesishing due to a leak. The amount of calcium in one fillup is negligible, as for calcium deposits concerns.) Don't forget anti-freeze. Common automotive anti freeze has water pump lubricating qualities that water doesn't. Be advised that use of any flush may cause a leak that you didn't previously notice, if the system is weak to start with. New hoses/clamps are a good idea before the new fillup. I prefer commercial products, if I flush a cooling system at all. Harsh, home-made remedies (like concentrates of Muriatic/Hydrochloric can damage water pump seals and head gaskets, especially if allowed to sit for long periods. (But vinegar is pretty mild actually, and unlikely to hurt anything that wasn't already ready to fail.)
