I have the dreaded clicking?

I have the dreaded clicking solenoid. 1949 8N. Solenoid is about two yrs as well as the bendix. Suspected dead battery, removed, placed on charger and showed about 75% charged. Battery is five years old. Positive cable is new, system is 12 volt conversion. negative cable is the flat braided kind and dosen't look frayed.

Symptons: upon depressing starter button starter will crank a couple revolutions very slowly and dragging. Depress starter again and just get the dreaded clicking. Wait a half hour and will get a couple turns out of the starter, then clicking again.

Removed grounding strap and sanded surfaces, no change.

I checked archives and will try jumping solenoid terminals and by-passing solenoid. Will not see tractor for another two weeks.

Is there anything obvious here where maybe I should order a switch, solenoid, or grounding strap or will the jumping or bypassing give me a better clue?

checking the voltage on the battery won't neccessarily tell you if the battery is good. needs to be load tested (any good parts store will do it free then try to sell you a new one of course)

5 year old battery is probably on its last legs, most don't last more then 3. I'd first start with a known good battery like the one in you car or truck if you don't have another one in a tractor or just laying around. Then if you have the same problem I'd say your starter is going bad and draging

Since you have converted to 12v., it would take about 15 min to remove the battery from your wife's Honda and put it in the "N" to see if it starts. If it starts, problem solved. Sounds like a classic bad battery problem.. JMHO...Ron

Have that battery checked for a weak or dead cell

the solenoid is clicking with the switch in the on and Off positions. Should it be clicking on the Off?

Ratsie..... ...the OEM 8N's keyed ignition system is SEPERATE from the starter solenoid which is internally always electrically HOT and works because you GROUND the solenoid little middle terminal by that BIG thumb switch by the tranny shifter. Bottom line, yes, yer solenoid will click no matter wheather yer keyed ignition switch is on or off..... .....Dell
