Off topic, but may be of interest. Have a barn built in 1919. Deminsions of 32. x 64 with approx 20ft tall on 64 ft side and 45ft on the 32ft ends. Just got quote of $4,386 for material and labor for power wash and 2 coats of latex paint. Here is the question; I have seen a few barns in area with steel/aluminum siding, not new pole barns, but old barns like mine. A couple really looked sharp. Has any one ever covered an old barn in steel? Remove old wooden barn boards or go right over the top. Barn is in good shape, new roof and masonry repairs in the last 5 years, last time painted was approx 12-15 years ago. Thanks for your input.

PS.

We are in Southeastern Michigan so it goes from -20F to 95F all kinds of weather.

My 1860 barn is 50x 80 with high side
about 15' to eave and low side about 26 feet.
My planks were very bad.
I replaced them with vertical
rough cut 1x8's ($.45 per board foot)
nail gun with galvanized 3" ring shanks.
One side lap jointed 1/2 " and other side with a 2 3/4" batton strip.
Now it looks like a good old 1860's
barn turning black.

Painted steel roofing would be faster but
at $2.50 a lin ft (3' width) and screws at
10 cents each , would be a high cost.

Siding will go right over the existing paint and nail right to the old siding. You can put 3/4" foam board under the new siding and really tighten up the old barn. I have vinyl on two out buildings, one with 1/4" foam, 1 with 3/4" foam. The 3/4" foam stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. We heat it with portable heaters and cool it with 18k btu window unit. It will be more expensive, but it will last almost forever.

I would hate to see a decent barn built in 1919 covered with siding and put more holes in it than needed. As it is just a barn, why not rent a air painter (the big roll around version) and let'er rip? I'll bet you could paint the entire barn in less than four hours this way.

I have an old three bedroom house that was built in 1920's that has been converted to a barn on my property. It has thick slats and bois d'ark stumps for the support. It is too far gone to really rennovate, so we are taking it apart, building a small cottage so we have somewhere to stay while we work there, and using the original wood slats for the outside of the cottage. Here is a pic of that house/barn - notice the 8N Ford Farming tin sign on the side :-)

Good luck,
Dan

Wow that's alot of money... my guess tin would be alot too.

Sounds like it is time to order 10 pizza's and a couple kegs of cold adult beverage, a manlift, and a bunch of friends / neighbors. Get a variety of roolers and a a bunch of pails of barn paint... figure sq footage based on the paint can recomendations.

Yea it did sound like a great deal of money, which is why I thought about tin. I thought as long as going to spend thousands might as well improve barn not just maintenance. Easy to get friends/family to help with building projects, no one including me likes to paint. Kind of scared of the power washing, I would not be suprised to find lead paint on a barn this old, worried about lead in well water. Paint part of the quote was 55 gallons for $1,986 and $2,400 for labor.

I have a lot of trouble with this quote. I just roughly figured the number of square feet of wall and doubled it. Based on a coverage of 400 sq feet per gallon you should be able to get by with almost half the paint quoted. Now lets look as the price. Almost 2 thousand dollars for 55 gallons, that is around forty dollars a gallon!!! Just a mit bit too much profit to my liking!!!!

Sawmill,
I agree $40 a gallon is definitely expensive paint. You certainly could buy a good exterior latex paint for around $30 a gallon. On the other hand, the labor figure he quoted wasn't that bad to power wash and paint two coats. I suspect that big old barn will really suck up the paint, especially since it's been so long since it was painted last.
I was a teacher for 28 years and painted during the summers until I retired (from teaching). Now I paint houses part time and spend a lot of the rest of my time playing (er...working) with my 8N.
I think that painting party is a good idea!

Most places I know about that have rentovated old buildings, put sealers on floors if there is Asbestos tile.. and then don't mess with it.. same with lead paint. Don't remove the old and get it into the environment.. just seal it over!
