Dell Posted this just a few days ago

Jack..... ..I hope you mean 23gals of fluid for each rear tire. And while this might be a little early. When it gitts down to freezing, ALWAYS start yer tractor in REVERSE. This will prevent the frozen to the ground rear tires from rotating the tractor over ON-TOP of you. But you knew that didn't you?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Ok I feel stupid, but I never knew or thought about this before and it makes perfect sense. You guys with all the experience have forgotten more than us novices know. How about everyone contribute one or two items on basic tractor safety...i.e.: operation on hilly ground, mud, stump/tree pulling, ROPS, SMV markers/lights. It maybe basic to you but valuable new information to us dummies. Thank You.

My little trick to assure I always start in reverse in winter is to always leave it parked nose to a tree. No question about which direction to start out. (yes, I'm pretty new at this)

On hilly ground never drive long to hill side only go up and down. Never turn around on a hill. If your brush hogging on a hill its better to back up the hill as far as you can with the hog up and let it down and hog going down hill.

That tip, and many others, are in the Operators Manual. I highly recommend everyone obtain one, they are great resources.

Great advice Dan, in my opinion it is the first and foremost manual to own (cheapest too), once one learns the important operation and repair basics then move on to the more advanced repair books.

don"t peel off your long sleeve flannel shirt and sit on it therby letting the sleeves dangle to close to a spinning PTO shaft.

Better yet, keep a PTO cover on any PTO shaft that is not in use at that time. With the Ns having to have the PTO engaged for the hydraulics to work that shaft spins a lot with nothing connected to it. Keep a cover on it!

Read about a case like that here a couple of years back. Likely we won't need long sleeves here till sometime in Jan but I'll be sure to keep myself and others away from spinning PTO shafts anyway. Hope all do likewise.
