OK, I've tried everything I know to get the PTO shaft out of the 8N. Losened the bolts beneath, banged on it, removed the side plate, nothing. Pluss the bearing is going and I'm afraid if I can't get it out or damage it (it is leaking now) where it won't work then I'm stuck - Any suggestions on getting this out of the tractor to replace it?

i have had my pto shaft off twice. the first time it pulled right out, the second time it would not budge. i finally used a 1 1/2" wood cheisel right where the pto gasget meets the back of the tractor. i did so very carefully until i noticed it started to come loose . good luck,

I"ve never run in to this problem myself, but I have read on the forum that a twisted PTO shaft will cause problems during removal.

It really should come out without a lot of resistance. I"ve read that you can take a reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade and cut the old PTO shaft through the inspection covers to aid in removal.

Search the archives here and you can find more detailed information. HTH. Rick

Ok.. you've pulle dthe 4 bolts holding the bearing carrier into the rear section of the tractor.. Have you got it to move any from there? As for loosening the pump bolts.. I don't see that as a huge help.. at most.. I'd try to rotate the shaft a bit while pulling.

On mine I used a soft copper maul and gently tapped on the corner of the bearing carrier and it slid out nicely. On a stubborn one.. how about slide a screwdriver thre the pto stub hole and giver it a tug with your hands using the axle as a brace for a foot... Perhaps tap ont he screwdriver shaft with a hammer. if still noting.. look thru the inspection hole and look at the rear end of the pto shaft.. the one that engages the tranny..e tc. Look for damages.. like twists.. etc..

Sometimes it is just a bit of surface rust ont he bearing carrier sticking it to the rear end. For that.. tap the bearing carrier around till the bolt holes are out of alignment.. that should free it up if it was just sticky.

report back.

( just to get you ready.. in case it does not come out.. mentally prepair yourself to have to cut the shaft before and after the pump.. then you can drop the pump.. knock the slug out, and pull the fore and aft ends of the remaining shaft.. and then get a new assembly.. etc. Not HARD.. just tedious.. )

I just changed mine out a couple of days ago.
Removed the 4 bolts and it pulled rite out.
Wasn't nothing to it. New one went rite back in.

If yours ain't coming out easy then something is wrong.
Being twisted is a good guess.
