I removed the cylinder head on my 1948 8N tractor just to look around and clean things up a bit before I crank it up....it had a metal head gasket. The gasket is in good shape but I still need to replace the gasket when I put the head back on right? I wasn"t sure because I"ve never seen the metal gasket like that before.

Okay, thanks...that's what I figured but I wasn't for sure. I got the new head gasket today so I'll be using a new one when I re-install the head. Thanks again.

Likely, your head gasket is not all metal, but a sandwich "composite" of metal top and bottom, with a sheet of asbestos in between.

Re-using the head gasket is not recommended. If it leaks, and water enters the cylinders, you'll have rust there, and once the water gets down in the oil, the oil becomes like a milkshake, and is very bad for the bearings!

If you decide to try re-using it, clean it up and try the old mechanic's trick of giving each side a couple of coats (with drying time in between) from a cheap can of aluminum spray paint from the Dollar Store. Let the paint dry before installing it.

Re-torque after warmup.

Likely, this will work, but do it at your own risk, and watch for signs of water getting in the oil!

Depends upon the availabiulity of the gasket and UR budget! I'd say try it, and see what happens! I've used the old one a couple of times with no ill effects! It is a 45 minute drive (1 way) to the Ford Tractor Dealer, and I was broke anyway. Back in the day, folks didn't have the $$$ to waste on buying new stuffs when the old would work! My opinion only!! I have reused a head gasket before, but it was one that was only on for less than 1 hour of run time (troubleshooting a valve problem). Anytime it is on for a significant time, replace it - they are only a couple of bucks.

Good luck,
Dan

I have been told by a professional mechanic that you always use a new head gasket when re-installing the head, no matter how good the old one looks.

However, if you like adventure, you can try it with the old gasket and see what happens.
