8N ignition problem - no spark

After I recharged the battery in my 1952 8N, I can't spark on any plug. I forgot to turnoff the ignition switch when I recharged the battery so I must have burned the points or ruined the condenser. I read Rob's excellent electrical trouble shooting guide. Rob starts by removing the primary wire from the coil and brushing it to ground to see if it will spark. My problem is locating the coil and the primary wire. Is it built-in to the top of the center mounted distributor? My 8N's serial number is *8N59636* Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thanks everyone! My little 8N is running now. Problem turned out to be a burned coil. That little springy thing on the bottom of the burned coil was covered with a thick crusty powder and the coil itself gave off a nasty burned odor. After I replaced the coil, the engine started right up.

Wow.. front mount unit.. and you left ignition on.. while charging it. Considering the ignition can flow up 3-4 amps I imagine you gave the charger a workout. Probably boiled the tar and shorted the windings in the square coil, and burnt up the points / rubbing block.. etc.
You may have even burnt up the ballast resistor.

You will notice that there is ONLY 1 wire going to your front mount coil.. that's the wire that comes from the side of the resistor , from the ignition switch.. etc... yes.. primary wire.

If it were me.. I'd get a new switch and ballast resistor ( optional.. if your on=ld one works ).. new points.. and check it.. if still nothing.. get a new coil... remember to gently stretch the coiled springy thing. Points gap is .015.. easy 2-bolt job to remove distrib.

Also.. put that battery back on charge! Make sure you are charging correctly base don system polarity. oem was 6v positive ground.. etc.

I vom or test lamp will be very helpfull in testing the circuit.

You should have 2.5-3.5 volts at the top of the coil, with the points closed and the ignitionon... battery volts with points open.

good luck.. and post back if you have questions..
