Hi guys, been on the road truckin for a couple of weeks and now back to the same problem I had before. I previously had a cracked coil and replaced it aling with condensor, points, rotor, and cap. It purred like a kitten and bush hogged for about 1-1/2 hours. Only problem was I had to flood it out to turn it off as just turning the key would not do it. I did this three or four times and thought I could live with it. Next day, no spark again! Current to top of coil ok. I checked points for slippage and .015 ok. Any ideas?? Gettin real frustrated!!

start at the beginning . check your key switch ,is it working ? it is ok, it isn't Check the wiring ,it is wrong. Then do the coil and points and all will be well. Forget the flooding nonsense.

I would be inclined to agree with coil/points damage due to a faulty (always ON) key switch. Leaving the key switch on with the points closed will burn up a coil and/or points in a hurry. Key switch is cheap. Coils and tune-up kits are less cheap. I would recommend replacing your key switch first. Then check your coil to see if it's burned up and ditto with the points. Might want to go ahead and get new ones anyway. Once you can turn it off with the key, look at getting a fuel shut off that will actually shut off fuel.

While I do agree that excessive and constant flooding can mess up plugs, I find it difficult to swallow that a single flooding or two will "ruin" spark plugs and require replacing. If that were so, then spark plug manufacturers would have made a killing in the 30's, 40's, 50's and even 60's from people flooding their cars on cold mornings. I will go along with the advantages of the AL-437 plugs over the champions. Had good luck on that one.

Jeb

Ronnie..... ...sometimes yer too close to the trees to see the forest.

WHY choke/flood yer engine to kill it when the key doesn't work when you have a 2-turn fuel cut-off valve under yer gastank?

Flooding leaves invisable deposits on the ceramic insulators of yer sparkies and them lazy sunnnagumms leak down the side instead of jumpin the gapp. Do I haffta tell ya? REPLACE YER SPARKIES. Autolite AL-437's recommended, gap 0.025 outta the box.

Then REPLACE YER IGNITION SWITCH!!! ..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell, you're missing the point that he likely has "killed" his points and coil because his ignition switch doesn't shut it down, and the ignition current remaining on after shutdown has fried them!

Or is this a "botched" 12-Volt conversion, and it's just the feedback from the alternator's "excite" terminal keeping it running, but at least that current ceases at shutdown?

Dell, thanks for the comeback but sp. plug damage after only 4 or 5 flood outs?? Thanks again.

Ronnie..... ...modern "no-lead" gasoline leaves invisable deposits on the white ceramic insulator. As I said, this allows the sparkies to leak off instead of jumping the gap. The sparkplug isn't "ruined", the deposits need to be burned off in a running engine. ONE SPARKIE AT A TIME. Yer N-engine will run quite well on 3-good sparkies while you change out a 4th sparkie and gitt the deposits burned off. Now save yer cleaned set of sparkies for the next time you flood yer engine. Simple, eh?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Flooding fouls the plugs and that is what causes the problem with the plugs.

Gentlemen thanks for all the input. Looks like I'll buy the ignition switch which sounds like very well may be the "fry baby", then coil, points, condenser. Hopefully cap and rotor still ok to use. Also, I'll get the set of sparkies for good measure. Thanks again.

This a 6v or 12v (alternator) system.

I'd agree with the others. If your switch is staying on.. or due to the 12v install, is staying powered.. then you need to fix that or you will keep burning coils and points.. etc.

Also.. what kind of resistors are you running in line.. and what coil type are you using?
