Just fired her up last Sunday, went to fire her up today and nothing! Checked the plugs- no spark. Put in new plugs and pulled the coil and cap off-can't see the points, but I could open them manually. The contact on the top of the cap was corroded and so I cleaned it. Cleaned all the internal contacts. Put it back together and no spark yet. Do I have to pull the whole distributor? It looks easy enough to do.

Suggestions? How do I check the coil/points/condenser? Of course I needed the tractor today.....

Hey one other thing before I tear into this thing tonight- can I just mark the distributor "cam" with a permanent marker to assure that it goes back in the same way or what?

Thanks in advance, joe

No need for that; it has an offset tang & it won't go back but one way unless you really force it in the wrong way.

Take the distributor off; it was designed to be worked on off the tractor. Two bolts. It is as easy as it looks. Get a new set of points, a condenser and a rotor. If the cap is corroded, get a cap as well. Gap the points at .015 on all 4 lobes of the cam. Make sure you do not ground the wire to the condenser to the body of the distributor. Pull the pigtail on the bottom of the coil to insure a good contact, and put it all back together. Chances are the points slipped or are corroded, just like the cap was. If you still don't get spark (as in a nice blue spark observed while hooking a plug wire to one of those old plugs & grounding the plug to the block) then get back on the board & you will get plenty of help. Could be a couple of other things causing no spark, but check the obvious first.

Thanks Bruce....I thought I was gonna have to do all that, no big deal though. Probably hasn"t had points/condenser/rotor since 197? anyhow. The plugs weren"t the originals, but were really rusty....The contact on the cap was com[pletely rusted over, couldn"t belive it ran at all.

I"ll keep you posted.

Joe
