have a 1949 8n front mount that has been converted to 12v and the resistor for the coil in taped up real good and buried under the hood also the orig. resistor is bypassed and not used, i guess my questions are
1. does the resistor need to be uncovered to let cool air get to it?
2. if i use a 12v coil do i need either resistor

tractor ran fine for about 2 hours mowing and started to cut out and lose power with occasional backfire though exhaust was wondering if the coil or the resistor could be heating up

im new at 8n troubleshooting so any help would be appeciated
thanks

Garner..... ...yep, yer cuttin' out and backfirin' and missin' is a sign of "weak sparkies".

Weak sparkies can be caused by overheated squarecan ignition coil melting its internal insulative tar and shorting out some of the windings. Interestingly enuff, an overnite cooldown will solidify the insulative tar and bring back good hot sparkies for about 1-hr; and then the tar melts again.

Weak sparkies can also becaused by "too-much" resistance but that is generally NOT TIME related as yer case report.

I'm rather surprized that the "resistor" is taped up because it runs HOT and can melt plastic insulation. It does need to be securely mounted. And depending upon the convertion guy, who know what resistor was used because there are several ways of converting. I haven't gottta clue to yours conversion.

On general principle, a real 12v coil needs NO RESISTOR. Unfortunately, the modern squarecan frontmount 12v ignition coil, sometimes needs current limiting 1/2-ohm resistor, and sometimes not. Unfortunately, neather the OEM 6v coil or the modern 12v coil are clearly marked as to application voltage. But a reasonable assumption can be made that yer current coil is a 6v coil; otherwize why install a resistor. Resistors are devices that make a 6v coil work on 12v..... ...Dell, a 12v advocate for the right reasons

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6-volt 52 8N, and I know how to do it right the first time. Infact I know 8-ways to do it and they all work.
