I was told that used motor oil was great for painting an old barn. Would it preserve or destroy the old oak boards.

did ya know..... ....all recovered (used)(motor) oil goes through one to three possible recovery scenarios.....it is either re-refined....reconditioned.....or reprocessed. It is used as a primary fuel agent in many power generation and manufacturing plants.....and believe it or not.....some of it even ends up back in your engines as motor oil. You can use it to paint your barn if you like.....but how about considering letting someobody clean it up first.....take our some of the harmful impurities....blend it back into an oil based paint.....and then put it on your barn. Just my opinion.

Kind of makes one wonder why everyone who lived in the last 100 years or so did not die some miserable death as a result of the used engine oil that was routinely spread on gravel roads by nearly every county highway department in the country.

Use it to paint your barn if you choose but do not tell anyone.

I agree with Dean.I remember the counties use to spray the county roads to keep down the dust. Now look around. We have more good water more deer, more people, more wild turkeys and much better health. As Bob says keep it on the ground and it will be eaten by bacteria...R.M. In AL

For those of us who worry about the effect of used oil on the environment I would like to point out that much waste (recycled) oil ends up in the asphalt that is used to resurface most of the streets and highways in this country. It not only leaches out in the rain and ends up in our water supply, it also vaporizes slowly and ends up in the air we breather. Kinda makes you wish all roads were made of concrete doesn't it?

Used oil is a good preservative and does not harm the environment unless it gets in a water source. This will not happen if you use common sense and the same good judgement you would use for any oil based product. There are actually bacteria in the ground that eat used motor oil.

Here's a link, I'm not a tree hugging dirt worshiper but I do have two small children and would like them to enjoy clean water.

It would be a good preservative, but I don't know how it would look. We used it to treat the oak flooring on grain trucks and wagons.

I really don't know how dangerous to the enviroment it would be if you brushed it on, very similar to any oil based paint or stain that one would normally use.

I have used old motor oil to soak fenceposts in before sticking them in the ground. I put it in a 50 gal drum and put the posts in upright and left them for a couple of weeks. Some local geezers highly recommended the process and it must have worked OK as the posts are still upright and sound-looking some 35 years later, of course 35 years ago environmental concerns were not at the top of too many folks' list.

Wow, man !! this really stirrs up some memories! Yep, we used to cut the new Southern States Barn Paint with the dreaded Used Motor Oil! (UMO Is NOT TOXIC WASTE AROUND A FARM, it's damn useful stuff! Many uses 4 it!) Paint seemed darker, and lasts a heell of a long time! I'd highly recommend U do it!

I'm quite sure it would preserve them.. However.. it would be a huge 'point source' for hazardous waste entering the environment via leaching and runoff.

You do realize that used motor oil is classified as hazardous material?

Better would be to buy that cheap asphalt fence paint. it gives a very durable and stable finish. Once the initial mineral spirits evaporate off.. it's essentially stable and environmentally inert.

Not much likes eating asphalt.. fairly bug/fungus resistant.. seals good.. long life.

I used it to paint my trailer deck.. has lasted 2x as long as plain PT wood for me so far.

People used to use this on maneuer spreader floors... same advice... works.. but not great for mother earth. I'm no tree hugger, and there are just times where a little polution is unavoidable. We can't worry about those as much.. but rather need to focus ont he polution that we can prevent.. like painting barns with used oil that can / will leach into the environment. Guess it's all those ecology / environmental science classes I had during CE school that really opens your eyes to this. My thesis was on wastewater handling.. mostly effluant handling.. but did include runoff sources.. etc.

I used 50/50 mix of used motor oil and diesal. I used a garden sprayer to apply. My pole barn was new, so it was fresh hemlock I was spraying. Came out beautiful, and the oil will protect the wood. On an old building, this mix will probably darken it close to black. Mine still looks great after 4 years..... Stan

Mother Earth News has free plans for a waste oil heater that can use up some of that stuff also. It is not a smoker and will heat a good size shop. I found it by typing drip oil burner into my search engine.
