I just rebuild a '39 9n turned it over a few times it fired and then the starter drive locked up. Could this be just rotten luck or could the motor be to tight? I just replaced standard rings and rod bearings and did a valve job. starter didn't sound quite right before rebuild. It also wore the flywheel teeth just a touch on the tranny side... please tell me this will be okay. (ready to pull my hair out!)
thanks.

i just recently rebuilt my 52 8n and the same thing happened. i had also had my starter rebuilt but kept the old starter drive. once it cranked the drive stayed engaged and fried my new starter. i had to go back and get the starter rebuilt again and also buy a new drive.... sounds like you have the luck that i do.

Is the motor free to spin??
About two years ago on my wifes '69 Mustang, the starter just "froze" and we couldnt get it to spin. I was in a hurry, so I just pulled the car home. Anyway... the starter gear had broken and a piece of the gear was jammed into the ring gear. It was locked up solid. I couldnt even remove the starter after the bolts were removed. I really had to pry the flywheel backwards to free up the starter. Sure glad I didnt have the wife dump the clutch when I was pulling her home!! Just a thought.... good luck.

Your rebuild has nothing to do with the apparently hung up bendix on the starter. Pull out the starter and wash off the bendix drive with solvent real good. Dry it, no oil, please ! Put it back in and try it again. If it still hangs up, you may need a new bendix. My $.02
