I always read on here, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". My '41 9n is missing the freeze plug in front of the starter. In its place, you may not believe this, but grandpa whittled a plug out of wood and evidently, took a mallet and pounded it in. I know he ran it like this for a good 40 years cause he even painted it to match the block. I'm an amataur here, but I'd have to guess there are no threads and would have to tap new ones (I don't have the tools). I'm kinda scared to pull the thing out and look. My use is occasional around the "estate" to blade the gravel in the drive, some mowing, so I'm not restoring, but want it looking good and operational. Kinda nostalgic of grandpa. It ain't broke, but is it?

I am very pleased with the responses. Thanks for the opinions. I'm leaving well enough alone, and I'll be pointing that out when I show off Grandpa's tractor.

I worked in a power plant and always kept a few short pieces of broomstick sharpened like a pencil in my tool box. If we would get a leak in a water tank, I'd just insert the pointy end and smack it with a hammer. They work well. I think your Grandpa was quite inovative and he even painted it. I wouldn't mess with it. I might keep a replacment freeze plug ready if ever needed, but in an emergency, I'd just whittle another wooden plug.

I'd say..Keep It In Memory Of Ur Grandad! If it ever busts, you'll have many minits to do something about it before the engine overheats! If you are only using it for casual things, it should outlast you and the next owner. My opinion only...U know what they say about opinions, hehehe. CC

THE GOLDEN SCREW!

There once was a little boy who was born perfectly normal except for a golden screw right where the naval is on everybody else. A fairy appeared to the mother of the little boy with the golden screw in his naval when he was only a day old and told the mother to never tamper with the golden screw no matter what.

When the little boy got to be about three years old he noticed that non of the other children or adults had a golden screw in there naval so he asked his mother about it and she relayed to the little boy what the fairy had told her after he was born.

This seemed to satisfy the little boy until one day when he was about 15 his curiosity just got the best of him and he got a big screw driver out of his daddy’s tool box and proceeded to do what he had been warned not to do.

When the screw came out of the naval his buttocks fell off!

Some things are best left alone!

Actually, replacing a missing freeze-plug (technically, a sand-hold plug) was once not uncommon and, if properly done, would last for many years.

I once had a pinhole in a plug in a 1947 Pontiac, which I plugged with a small pointed piece of wood. It was still there and not leaking anti freeze when I sold the car over 30 years later.

Roscoe..... ...yer granpappy was clever. And you've been lucky. Howsomevers; you might be smart for when the jurryrigged freeze plug does start leaking, buy a "spare" freeze plug. ($1, cheap) They are sized 1-3/8. Freeze plugs are NOT SCREWED. They are a "dome" sheetmetal circle that when installed, you kinda smash the dome and that FORCES the freeze plug into a very "tight" fittment. And surprizingly enuff, freeze plugs ain't for freezing, they are where the sand-mold pattern that makes the water jacket comes shaking out after casting the block and it cools down at the foundry..... ..Dell

It's broke when water starts running.

Be proud of grandpa's ingenuity.....

Leave it.
