8N PTO Questions

The splines on my 8N's PTO are worn to nothing & I've been tearing up rolled pins on my ORC.

The wear looks very fresh on the PTO shaft -- which makes me wonder if the ORC didn't contribute to the wear -- but the PTO shaft was pretty worn when I bought the tractor 10 years ago.

The question --- I know the PTO shaft needs replaced --- but what's the consenus on the way to go.

Replace it with the 1 1/8" PTO & use the existing ORC? I don't know if it is part of the wear problem & it's 10 years old.

Replace it with another 1 1/8" PTO & buy a new ORC?

Replace the PTO with the upgraded 1 3/8" one & buy a new ORC properly sized for it?

I use the PTO for Brush Hogging & Finish Mowing only.

Thanks gang....

Funny..... ...don't' mucka'round with the OLD 1-1/8 PTO shaft. INFACT, you can't even buy a replacement 1-1/8 PTO shaft, they are ALL modern 1-3/8 PTO specs. And yes, gitta a NEW 1-3/8F-to-1-3/8M ORC. Brushhoggin' DEMANDS ORC or you'll be runnin'into the corner of the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wifes car (don't ask) $60, cheap..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed ORC safety preacher

I did not realize you could not even get a new 1 1/8" shaft..

That makes it simpler to me ---

The ORC was the first thing I bought for the tractor. Mine is 12 Volt already so "purity" is not my intent --- this is a working tractor for now.

I have one friend who's father was killed when his ORC-less N dumped him in a creek & the tractor pinned him under water.

Another ORC-less friend broke his back when he mowed himself off of the top of Green Mountain in Alabama -- he's lucky he can walk & still curse himself about it.

I knew the answer was here -- Thanks.

I'd measure / inspect the splines on the ID of the ORC. If they are ok, you have 2 good options... get a good used 1 1/8 pto that has a good seal.. or get a new 1 3/8 pto and a new ORC.

Consensus will probably be to get the new shaft.. however I know some people like the OEM shaft for originality. My NAA has the oe shaft.. and i plan to keep it like that till the seal lets go... 8n has a new 'modern' shaft as it saw more 'real' work.. etc.

Thanks --- I think Ill go new & let the next owner restore it to purity if they wish -- this is a working tractor that mows & cleans snow.

I appreciate the time you've taken.

Well if the PTO shaft happens to be a little bent then you may have a problem pulling it out thru the Pump.
