Too Much Oil Pressure????

As I said in the message below today we finally started the tractor we have been working on since January. Before we started the tractor we towed it with my truck with the ignition off and in third gear until the oil pressure came up. Since I hadn't gotten the top on the oil filter correctly we ended up leaving a 50 foot long oil slick down the center of the road but it had about 25 pounds of oil pressure.

When we started it later the oil pressure guage pegged out and I immediately shut it down. I pulled the relief valve out and checked it and it looked OK. We put 30 weight oil in it and it was only about 55 this morning so I started it again and let it idle. It did come down off the peg when it warmed up but it still had 35 pounds at a 400 RPM idle.

We are talking about putting 5W-20 oil in it and trying it again. What do you guys think? Should I be concerned about this or let it go? When we did the engine we plastiguaged all the bearings and they were all .002-.003 clearance and I put a kit in the oil pump.

Do you think it will loosen up some and the oil pressure go back down to normal when it wears in?

Thanks again for all the support provided by this board.

Paul K.

I wouldn't worry about it one bit, I always stretch the relief springs on my old tractors. So all of mine max out the gage, and I've never had any trouble. Have been doing this for 40 years on my old vehicles and tractors. Have had many warnings about all the terrible things that are going to happen to my enigines. Yet not one time have I ever had any trouble. I'd say run it and count your blessings.

Paul..... ..the N's oilpressure is nominally reliefed at about 35psi by a spring-loaded pressure relief valve behind a BIG NUT behind yer waterpump. But it is also governed by bearing clearances and 2-orifices in the centerpipe of yer oilfilter. It then most likely drains into yer governors cup for final return to the engine oilpan. Remember, yer engine oil system is a "by-pass" system and only about 15% of the oilpump's output is finally filtered. Considering lotta 1930's engines didn't even have oilfilters, I think Ford's N-Engine was technologically advanced.

Before I got too excited, I'd start diss-assembleing the oil return lines. Governor's cup. Then oilfilter input line, then engine block "T". Lettchur engine run while you crack open these tubing joints. Lett the engine oil flow (it won't hurt yer engine for a short time) so you gitt a sense of wheather you have an oil-return line blockage somewheres..... ...Dell

My 8N reads max on my meter of 50 lbs when cold, drops to maybe 35 after 15 minutes or so, then bottoms out around 25 pounds after an hour or so and stays there for the rest of the time, sometimes even goes up a couple pounds after maybe 3 hours. Oil pump rebuilt plus some engine bearings etc last year.

My 8N oil pressure is almost exactly the same as yours. Rebuilt it 5 years ago and it has been that way from the start of rebuild. I can live with it.

Paul, are you sure your gauge is accurate?

Brand new guage but I guess anything is possible. I can try replacing it with another one I have to see if they read the same. Thanks for the idea Bob.
