I have a 51 Model 8N which just recently started giving me problems turning to the right. It turns to the left fine, sounds like it may need greased, like its getting hung up or something. I can"t find a place to check or add oil to the steering box. Or if I"m totally wrong, someone correct me on whats going on. Thanks in advance for any information!

RDF..... ...the later 8N steering gearbox with the adjustable set-screws has a "secret-trick" steering oil fill'em-up. Remove yer steering gearbox sheetmetal hold'em bolt directly behind the proofmeter (lower r/h bolt) and probe with a wire witha "J" hook in the end. That is how you fill'em up.

I use 140wt outboard lower unit gearbox-oil innnna plastic squeeze'm tube with long pointed fill'em spout. Fill till it won't take enny-mores and dribbles back out the fill'em hole.

Hard to tell why you have steering problems just to the right, but I bettcha its yer steering box upper bearing. Watch yer steering wheel as you swing thru the range. (tractor front axle up on jack) It will probably "LIFT" as you swing, sure sign your steering gearbox bearing needs replacement with a METAL not plastic bearing. Consult yer I&T FO-4 repair manual ($22, cheap) for details..... ...Dell

Thanks Dell, I figured if anyone knew you would. I'll try this tomorrow evening and see how things work out. May have to replace bearings but this happened one time before and I jacked it up, played with the steering and it mysteriously started working! Anyway, thanks for the advice!

Hmm.. sounds like your top bearing may be coming apart and dropping rollers into the gears...

Not good.
