49 8N.
I have changed the thermostat three or so weeks ago, and installed it in the correct direction. I over heated (boiled out the overflow tube) this afternoon while discing for 20 minutes. Now earlier in the last week or more, I disced, mowed and just ran up and down the road. No problems. Why would it "occasionaly" overheat? Outside air temp has not been too different to matter and the fins on the radiator are clean.(good air flow) Could it be mucked up inside the radiator? or something getting in to the thermostat?
Thanks Rick T.

How"s the fan belt? Should have 1/2 inch flex half way between the generator & the water pump.

It is tight. I think it might be crud floating around in the coolant. Maybe preventing the thermostat from opening. I will try and flush and see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

Whens the last time you flushed to rad. ? It could well have a rust/lime build up in it. I'd drain the system, fill with vinagar and go work it for an hour or so. Let it cool and drin the vinagar and then flush with the garden hose for an hour or so then refill with antifreeze. I've tried almost all the aito parts stores flushes and they do not work as well as the vinagar and the vinagar is cheaper also

Could be a mucked up radiator, like you suggested. Is it really gettting hot or could it just be overfilled. I have a tendancy to put more water in mine than it'll hold hot and it'll blow some out until it reaches its level. Usually if you drain out some of the anti-freeze if the radiator is mucked up you'll be able to see a lot of scale clogging the passages from the radiator cap hole. Most radiator shops can rod it out and get your radiator back in good condition for around $50.
Good Luck, Lee

I had used it after the thermostat change without incident until now. I lossed three fourths of a gallon of coolant, I do not think it was over full because it did'nt do that before. I went back out after 1/2 to an hour and disced for 30 minutes without incident. I am confused!
Thanks for the reply.

This is a long shot but I have seen it happen in cars. You might want to watch the lower radiator hose when the engine is warm and the rpms are high. You might find that it is sucked flat, keeping water from flowing. On cars, there is usually a spring in, or built into, the lower hose to prevent this. As I said, its a long shot but it is sure worth looking at.
