I just bought two ford tractor's a 9n and a 8n.The old boy I bought them off of just put a new 12volt battery in the 9n .He said that the starter was a little weak and he put this 12 volt battery in to help it spin the starter a little faster. He did put a resister on the ignition wire to step it down to volt's .Does this sound all right to you guy's that work on these old tractors. It will not mess up my generator will it or is there something else that I can do to make the starter work better off of the old 6volt battery.(other then putting a new starter on it}what he told me about the 9n when I bought it was will the 6volt it would turn over and over int'l the battery would go dead.He said that it acted like it just was not turning over fast enough.
I was over to his house one day when he still had the 6volt battery in it and it sounded like it was not turning over fast enough. So sprayed a like starting fluid into it and it fire right up.
One guy that I work with said that maybe the voltage regulator need to be polarized for the old 6volt battery will stay up at full charge all the time.
I would like to put it back to 6 volt ,any good idles out there on this matter.
also can some one tell me how to polarize and voltage regulator for I need to do this to the 8n I have .(had to redo the Electrical system) thank for any help I can get on these problem,s

Do you have a big fat cable going from your battery to the starter? Are it's terminals clean and tight? Ground cable too?
You might want to check the archives for more on the proper size cable.

Hope this helps.

The 12 V battery needs to come out!
Have the 6V battery checked under a load. I
ll bet it is weak.
Get a new 6V battery, polorize the generator and check that it charges, Probably won't due to the 12 V burning out either the V/R or the generator.
Probably the V'R and they are cheap. Replace it and have the generator checked.
If it still starts hard (turns over very slow) rempove the started (look in the archives as to how to do it) and get it re-built.
You don't have to get a new one.
Luck and keep us posted as to what you find.

does that make a 12 volt battery into a six volt?

and would a 12 volt battery reduced to 6 volts cause a drop in amps?

and isn't that why the 12 volt battery was put in to start with?
