Just got back from Vt.where my tractor is located. I wanted a little seat time before putting it away for winter so I went to start it and the battery was dead. I got out the jumper cables and got it going. Was bush hogging and about 30 minutes later it just died so I took the jumpers out again and figured it must not be charging and put the jumpers on for about ten minutes to charge it up a little. She started right up so I figured I better not press my luck and just put it away. Well I shut it off and set up my place that I keep it. I went to start it one more time with the jumpers and it would not turn over so I figure I should let it charge for a while. As I watched the tractor all of a sudden smoke started pouring out of the alternator so I disconnected the jumpers. I didn't realize I left the key on. It is a 1941 9n that has been changed to 12 Volt. The alternator is a one wire delco. What could have gone wrong? By having the key on did it do the damage. The other two times it was jumped it was fine. Could the alternator have something wrong that would make it burn up? I know this was long winded but need your help. Thanks Rick.

1.) You may have connected the booster cables backwards, and let the smoke out of the alternator.

2.) The alternator is NOT a one-wire Delco. Delco didn't make those. Aftermarket outfits subjected perfectly good Delco cores to the "one-wire" abuse.

(From "# 2", you can probably guess how I feel about 1-wire alternators. The "electrically challenged" tend to use those as a simple substitute for "doing it right", and connecting the Delco alternator as God and the GM engineers that designed it intended!)

3.) If you care to know how the GM engineers inrended their alternator tobe connected, surf the site linked below:

Did you maybe put the battery in wrong. If you hook up an alternator back wards it will smoke it in more ways then. Also if you hooked up the jumps wrong it will smoke it and maybe even the alternator in your car/truck
