I posted in here before what I could make out of my serial # and 8n558533 is what it looks like though there is one numeral that is basically gone from rust I cleaned it but it is corroded away I will see if I can clean it more though. I really want to narrow down the years mine could be in is a front dist and has no tach. It also has the solid gearshiftr nob not the screw on type. When did they quite makeing the 8ns like mine?? Is there a difference in the decals for them depending on year made? Thanks. Richard

I was looking at John Smith's site and see the steering gear difference and mine has the old style and the one on it was wore out so I replace it with another so it must be a 49 or older. Richard

Richard..... ....iff'n I understand you correctly, you say yer 8N engine is 4-nipple frontmount. Ford changed the 8N engine to 5-nipple slidemount at s/n 8N263844 in May 1950. And added the "proofmeter" at s/n 8N290271 in June 1950. And changed the 4-speed shifter arm to a replaceable plastic ball type at s/n 8N252844 in April 1950. The I&T FO-4 serial number listing lists s/n 8N524076 as the "last" 1952 8N and yer claiming s/n of 8N558533.

Bottom line, yer claimed s/n of 8N558533 does NOT CORRELATE with enny of yer other "mfgr clues". I'd suggest that you take 'nutter' lookie-look at yer engine s/n. You might even want to gitt down'n dirty and look underneath at yer hydraulic pump plate, sometimes there is plain date of pump mfg stamped around the right-corner pressure relief port.

Other'n "braggin' rights"; yer year of mfgr is NOT CRITICAL for most replacement parts purposes..... ..respectfully, Dell

Thanks Dell I am going to look at it further I must not be seeing that # correctly it has the front dist no removeable shifter ball and no tach I will look under it and check for a date on the hyd unit. Is there any difference in decals through the years on these? I want to refurbish it this winter and install new decals also a new battery tray and grill. I wouldnt mind installing a Sherman step up/Down Combo as well sometime. I just would like to try and narrow down when it was made as best as I can. Richard

Dell, I've got one of the last frontmounts made, SN 262918,. The block and oil pan casting codes are identical, Feb 17, 1950 (B170) The shifter has the removable ball; the transmission casting code is Feb 9, 1950. My 1950 sidemount, with a proofmeter, SN 273657 has a block casting code of March 28, 1950, a pan code of March 22, 1950, tranny code of March 31 & pump code of March 8. With the dates you have for conversion to the sidemount, looks like assembly was running about 8-10 weeks after casting.

Bruce..... ...I really don't have exact production date changes of these various mid-1950's 8N changes. I just took total 1950 production, divided by 12, and linerally interpolated the change date into round months from the N-Ford Master Parts Catalog effectivity s/n listing change. Does it really matter?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Google "Smiths 8N ford tractors"; you'll get all the info you need to identify the year.
