Okay have a new axle and bearing and race and both cork seals on the way I already have the seal that presses into that tin plate and the new hub. First question is should I put anti seaze on the axle and hub before I install it? Secondly I am going to have to find a big tourqe wrench.... My 8n doesnt have the outer axle seal and the dealer told me that started in 48. So mine must be a 48 or older unless someone forgot to put it back in there. Richard

Do not use an lubricant on the splines of the axle at the hub. The intend is to prevent the spline from moving once it is torqued down.

It should be retorqued every 50 hours until the nut will not move after 50 hours of use.

Do it this way and it will never wear out.

The 48 8N did not have the internal seal in the trumpet housing. Only the outer seal that rides the hub flange. The inner seals came out in late 1950????

Thanks Zane I will just put the hub on without anything. I'll just tighten it up like you guys say and keep an eye on it for a while.

I took a 3/4" drive breaker bar and added a 6ft
lenght of pipe and jumped up and down until it would't tighten anymore, seem to have worked.

Do not put anti-seize on the axle and hub - put a good quality short fibre grease, or good molly grease - make sure to pack the bearing real good before installation.

You do not need a torque wrench for the rear axle work - the German Torque Value of "Goodentight" will work just fine. The big center axle nut gets torqued to 450 lbs - which you would not find a torque wrench for that value below the cost of your tractor anyway. Get a BIG 2" wrench and tighten it up until you can hang on it, drive it awhile and tighten it again, drive it a few hours or days and tighten it AGAIN. Keep doing this until it will not tighten any more.

All 8Ns have an outer oil seal, it is the inner seal that only the later models have. You need to know the year of your tractor - it makes a difference.

Click on the link below for some great first timer advice on this proceedure.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks Dan I was kind of figureing on just tightening it with big tools as a tourque wrench like that would be near impossible to find to borrow. Yes I will pack that bearing well. I went ahead and got one from a dealer as it is close by and should be here in a couple days. The seal I was reffering to must be the inner seal its the one that inserts in the axle trumpet. Mine doesnt have one in it. Thanks for the link. Richard
